OHH my goodness! I feel so aweful... number one I dont even know HOW this happened. I have been having a psoriasis outbreak so when a round dry patch of skin appeared on my arm I didnt worry about it. Today the Dr. who I work with told me its ringworm. First, I got pissed because everyone was saying the ferrets gave it to me, that just irked me like just because their pets their dirty? And I didn't appreciate the tone like if i deserve it for having them... Too bad I've had this red patch of dry skin since before I got SoCo. Not to mention, Mojito and Kahlua haven't been outside in ages. If anything, it could've been my dog but I sincerely have my doubts about that, he has no hairless patches. As you can imagine, I checked everyone over thoroughly. Mojito and Kahlua and Tequila are fine. Yesterday I noticed that SoCo had a little pinkish hue to an area of his fur and i THOUGHT it was just a stain from his ground beef dinner (he practically bathes in it) but i gave it a closer look and I think he may have ringworm now, too. I cant believe I gave my baby ringworm. I feel aweful. I dont even know how I got it. I used to work in pounds and shelters and even in a stray 'refuge' where the conditions were horrid and I know that SEVERAL of the animals i have worked with in the past have had ringworm, when I was a kid one of my best friends had it. I have never, ever had it. Why now? I dont get it What do I do? Can the vet give me something topical? I read about this stuff, Ring-Ex that is supposed to be a natural remedy for ringworm Ill put a link below... Does anyone know if its ligit? Omg i feel so terrible! Do I have to wash all their bedding down, right? Do I have to replace the plastic floor protectors in their bedroom? Should I wash out the carrier that I leave out for SoCo to play in? The tubes? (I dont have a hose so I have no clue how I am going to wash the 5ft tube... and what about the carpet?! Omg I am freaking out!!! HELP?! Sorry forgot the Ring-Ex link: www.nativeremedies.com/petalive/ring-ex-skin-cat-dog.htmlTheres also this stuff: www.nativeremedies.com/petalive/ring-ex-skin-cat-dog.htmlit says its 100% Neem Oil.. Since this stuff is an online exclusive, I wonder if I can just go to the vitamin store and get Neem oil?

I have Biocaine (antiseptic first aid lotion) which helps prevent infection, reduces pain, swelling, licking and promotes healing. Can I put some a little dab of that on SoCo??? Its for dogs and cats but maybe it will keep it clean/prevent itching? He doesnt seem bothered by the little red mark (theres no hair loss, but it is a pinky-red color) he isnt itching it but I dont want him to start because then he may give himself an infection...

ew! I'm so sorry! Ringworm sucks! I know this from experience because I work as a preschool teacher and I ended up getting it from one of my students about 3 years ago and I was livid! The boy's mom was one of my co-workers and she knew he had it when I discovered the fungus, it was about the size of an orange! It was huge and she's all yeah I have meds for that at home...she didn't tell us he had it or keep it covered I was so pissed, then she lied about it to our boss! GRRR!!! Our Dr prescribed ketoconezole cream for me and my son to use...I've used diluted tea tree oil to treat it and I've heard that some people use bleach and Blue Star ointment. I'm not sure what you could use on the Fuzz that's safe...

My doctor gave me a prescription that Im going to get filled tomorrow. I would've done it after work today but i had to get home and check the kids over. I am thinking I probably got it from one of our patients since we have several with ringworm looking infections but they always swear its nothing. The nurses n Doc dont have to touch them on the hand or crook of their arm me, being the phlbotomist, am forced to touch the hands, arms, crook of the arms etc. The Doc asked me if I could use selson blue on them...?? I dont know, sounds like it could be bad. I have a shampoo with tea tree oil in it and I used a little on SoCo's infected-looking area. Im hoping that will at least sooth it if its bothering him, though it doesnt seem to be. He did wine a little when I tried to get a better look at it though...

Ringworm is... weird. I somehow got it in high school over summer vacation. It was a perfect red, itchy circle on my back/left shoulder area. I don't know how it spreads because i did everything the same as my twin sister that summer and i never passed it along to anyone in my family. People are soooo ignorant when they say things like ferrets pass these kinds of things... people are 100x more dirty/ infectious than ferrets

If you think SoCo may have contracted it- get him to the vet to have it looked at. Don't trust human meds to work, or even be safe, for ferrets.

I thought I remembered reading that tea tree oil is harmful to cats and ferrets I can't find the article, but I'd use caution until someone can confirm tea tree oil is safe

cats and dogs are more likely to spread ringworm to you than a ferret! especially dogs since they go outside more and they carry it in on their feet. my moms cats are allowed to go outside. this is why i always kept them away from my ferrets but the thing is that it the ringworm fungus can also be on the surface of an object. then you touch it and voila! i know that tea tree oil is safe for cats. my mom has used that and also apple cider vinegar but then again, she's kind of weird. she had it on her hand once and she would soak it in the vinegar. she smelled horrible for days. it did seem to work though. i'd google that and see if it is ok to put on your ferret. problem is how are you going to keep vinegar on your ferret! i think you are supposed to soak the affected area in it. keep the spot covered with a bandage for a few days while your meds work that way you won't spread it to anyone else. ringworm can only be spread through direct contact.
is mojito biting scratching, itching at the area that you are referring to? if he is then that would be a sign of ringworm.

Please don't use Tea tree oil on your fuzzes (or any EO for that matter). Have you confirmed that your little one has ringworm? There is 2 different types local and systemic. Local infections tend to be small areas and readily respond to topical treatments (calendula is one suggested). Systemic infections occur in multiple areas on the skin usually require constitutional treatments to eliminate the disease. Another remedy that is also suggested is the homeopathic "Thuja" at 30C potency (this can be used along with the calendula ointment). You can reference this further in "Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs, Small Doses for Small Animals" by Don Hamilton DVM Just so you are aware this article does make reference to the use of Tea Tree Oil in combating this but this has proven to be detrimental to cats since the writing of my book. I don't know if there is a more recent book been published ciao

I agree, get to the vet and have it tested to be certain what it is before you try to treat it. SoCo could have the beginning a mast cell tumor or something else very benign. Did a doctor actually do a scraping to decide you have ringworm? If not, don't assume that it is!
We recently thought one of our dogs (named Mojito, coincidentally) had ringworm. It was so confusing because it was the middle of winter and he'd had very little contact with any animals outside of our home. It happened that I had a dermatologist appointment already scheduled before I could get in to the vet's, so I asked that doctor about it. (We always talk about Mo because Mo has a a lot of interesting skin stuff going on, being hairless, and his wife used to have a crestie too.) I described it and he immediately and emphatically said no, it wasn't ringworm, even though yes it was a round, red, rough ring, with other small patches nearby. He was right, and Mo's skin cleared up in a few days with a tiny dab of my own corticosteroid stuff. Just keeping it clean with a little antiseptic and anti-itch cream probably would have done the same.
I brought the whole thing up with the vet next time we were in, and the vet agreed with what we'd done, and said that if it looks like ringworm it probably isn't! So I'd get a definite diagnosis for both you and SoCo.

oh wow. i guess i'll tell my mom not to use tea tree oil on her cats anymore. even though she hasn't had a ringworm incident in a while. what exactly happens to cats when you apply tea tree oil to their skin? i actually never put home remedies on my ferrets. if i see something weird i just go straight to the vet with it. it seems that alot of things you can use on cats and dogs don't apply to ferrets. better to be safe than sorry.

Anecdotal evidence says it contributes to massive organ failure over time because the EO's build up to toxic levels in their system. Carnivores cannot excrete them from their bodies, so the effect becomes cumulative.

TTFR and I are taking Dingo and Mojito to the vet on Saturday and Im thinking of bringing SoCo to see if the vet would mind just looking at it to see if it seems like he has it. The meds I posted links to arent human meds they are for pets and the antiseptic i have at home that i considered using is also for pets. I would never put/use human meds on a fert, let alone a baby fert

I thought I remembered reading that tea tree oil is harmful to cats and ferrets I can't find the article, but I'd use caution until someone can confirm tea tree oil is safe I really hope it isn't. I used just a little bit in a looot of water and bathed him. Before the bath it looked like on the left side of his neck was one big mark where the fur had a reddish hue and the skin seemed discolored/pinkish but there was no fur loss, no raised skin/blisters, i dont think i would've seen it if i wasnt under bright light- on the right side it looked like he had 2 little ones, again the fur had a reddish hue but the pinkish discoloration. After the bath in the two little ones on the right were completely gone and on the left it was still slightly discolored but not pinkish, it wasnt a raised patch or dry skin or blisterish or anything but the skin its self had almost the same tone as craddle cap on a skin baby. TTFR and I are going to the vet on saturday with Dingo and Mojito and I am considering bringing him just to ask, I know he wasnt signed up for the appt so Im hoping the vet will understand its kind of an emergancy thing that just popped up AFTER the appointment was made
