I am so stressed with my IBD ferret,i don't know what to do and yesterday i notice that when he goes to the litter box to pee or poop i can hear from his breath sound that he is straining. He is now on byatril antibiotic for his IBD,in the beggining he had more energy but now again the same things,he is lethargic.3 weeks now his spleen is a little bit enlarged. He is not having any hair loss or excessive itchiness(i don't know if the fact that he is sleeping in a dark room plays a role in not showing any signs of adrenal disease.)What do you think it has?

From recent personal experience, straining to urinate is not something that should wait to see a vet. My baby ended up having stones that caused a urinary blockage ( not trying to scare you). I would get him into the dr today for an exam.

i know it's something really serious but vets here in Greece are not really experienced because there aren't many ferret owners here....i'm trying to collect as much information as i can.!

I agree with SilverMarble. Straining to urinate is not something to take lightly. From experience, bladder stones come on fast and once it turns into a blockage they crash FAST. It becomes exceedingly uncomfortable

They should do an X-ray straight off, stones will most likely be visible from the x-ray. What kind of food is he eating?

He is 3 years and 9 months old(neutered at 8 months old)In the beggining, for 1 year he was on kibble and then he was on raw food for 2 years (Chicken breast, legs, heart, liver, bones from chicken breast, eggs and sometimes beef)He developed this allergy and he is 2 months now on feline ZD and now i have started giving him medium-done rabbit with his kibble.

He needs to see a vet immediately and have x rays done, two of the most common causes of straining to urinate are either a prostate problem caused by adrenal disease usually (which can present without the usual symptoms) or stones in the bladder, kidneys or urethra. Both conditions are likely fatal if not treated quickly.

I'm afraid I agree with the previous recommendations. It's not anything to play with. I've had 2 ferrets block up and the poor wee things are in agony. It makes them very sick very fast. Considering your issues with IBD and this you might want to consider that you may be dealing with adrenal. It's just a thought. Otherwise, you may be dealing with stones. A bladder infection can cause stones. It's just a thought. Either way, your little one needs to be seen by a vet probably for some sort xray to get an idea as to how to proceed ciao

Also, I'd call around to any clinics that are listed as having avian vets, as many of those clinics will carry Lupron for their bird patients, if not deslorelin. In our clinic, the vet that sees my ferrets is actually a board cert. avian vet and she uses lupron or des pretty frequently for female birds with overactive reproductive issues. Just a thought, since finding Lupron/des otherwise may be difficult.
Lighting a healing candle for your little guy, I know how scary this stuff can be.

Good point Silvermarble... any vet that treats cats/dogs/horses may have des available.

That's true, any vet who has a large show dog clientele will probably carry DES ciao

The sad part is the X-rays won't diagnose adrenal, unless they are abnormally enlarged.

That is true, but if there are nit any stones it will be either infection or adrenal disease....is 50 dollars a good price for the x rays.?
