Sonny is 2.5 yrs old. About 1 yr ago we noticed a tiny lump on the tip of his tail. it grew very slowly to about the size of a small grape. Here it is the day of surgery. it is hard to take pics with Sonny because he moves alot. Night of surgery: There are no external sutures. Sutures are inside and dermabond was used on the outside. The vet was very good and the surgical site is very clean. Perfect surgery in my opinion. I am very very pleased. Here is the incision site approx 24 hours after surgery. He must be a bionic ferret because look at all that hair that has already grown! she shaved his tail pretty bald yesterday! Especially at the tip! Please excuse the hair on the carpet. this is the family room where the dog lives and I need to vacuum. That hair is either mine or the dog's. LOL Another view of his tail 24 hours after surgery.

He is doing well! groggy yesterday from anesthesia but today he was almost back to his normal self. I am trying to keep him quiet (hard to do since he free roams and i do not own a cage). Keeping him mostly confined to the bedroom.

Just checked- this is the medical reference section When setting this forum up general consensus among staff was to restrict posting here to keep everything pertinent so nothing gets "lost"

With that kind of fur growth power do you think he could send some across to Fun-Go....he's been trying to grow fur on that rat tail of his for 2+ years now.....he's got 5 strands on the tip...that's it ciao

I have not seen any rat tail with Sonny (yet). he always has a very thick nice coat. it must be because i leave the air conditioner on very cold in the house all year round. ;D we kind of have to keep the house cold because the dog has ALOT of dense fur and he cannot tolerate the heat. then again, not sure whether I would see rat tail with deslo as a preventive. too many variables that i am working with here. he is certainly healing quickly. I don't know if i mentioned this to you guys : he had his preventive deslo on 1/12/13 . huge needle as is typical with the deslo implants. he had a large scab where he was jabbed. well, within just a few days (literally it was about 3 days) the large scab had fallen off and he was all healed up. as if nothing had ever happened!

I find all my guys heal very well after the DES implant. That's one horrible looking needle though I find for the most part ferrets heal from superficial wounds very quickly (or at least raw fed ferrets appear to) I wonder if kibble fed ferrets heal as quickly . I know that my vet and the surgeon were astounded as to how quickly Thor's surgery site healed over....though he looked like he had a mohawk for a while ;D The surgeon mentioned that some other ferrets that he had dealt with had not healed as quickly but then there may have been other factors in play as well that we don't know about ciao

No I don't think they heal as quickly. I have comparisons because I used to feed kibble and I have been using Melatonin implants (also very large needle) for many years.
