Hello all, while waiting for approval I've been reading some of the threads and there is really good information. I came across the aging by teeth thread and it really makes me wonder about Kadie one of my adoptees. I was told that she was about 1 1/2 years old, but Kadie's teeth are in horrible shape. Broken and missing fangs, brown colorings of the teeth, and her love filled kisses are accompanied by a not so lovely smell. Lol. The previous owner was feeding them Marshall, and over the last week ( since I brought them home) I've been switching them to Evo. They will both be going in for checkups next month because I'm a bit of a worry wart at the moment. I adopted a sick kit from an animal shelter and dispite our and our vets efforts didn't make it. My adoptees seem to sleep a bit, but they are getting used to having an open cage and free run of the living room /hallway/bathroom. They seem to be adjusting to the change ok, and I'd like to know if anyone can think of anything odd that may constitute an early vet visit. They both have the Marshall dots tattooed in their ears. Kadie is a DEW and Sadie is a Silver Mitt. I have also tried jingle ball deaf checks.....and either their both deaf, don't like the ball, or are still to busy playing detective/ sock collector. Lol. Any advice is welcome

I'll get your membership approved this evening In the interim, welcome! The biggest worry right now I think would be the wee one's teeth. If they are that bad she needs a cleaning and quite likely one or more extractions. Watch for signs of pain and not wanting to eat. Sorry to hear about that poor baby, and thank you for caring for him

Hello and congratulations on your wee ones. I'm sorry that your rescue of the kit was unsuccessful. Our wee ones are a fragile lot, resilient in someways, very weak in others We love them just the same though If you want to try taking pictures of your little ones teeth we can try and supply you with possible answers to their age. Now, no matter what we come up with, it's only a guess and many other factors play into the whole aging equation...but it does help you deal with possible illnesses. You've seen the photos of our ferret photos, so it will give you an idea as to what we're looking for. You may actually have to take Kadie in for some dental work, especially if her mouth is absolutely foul. Lethargy, might be an issue (it's an underlying issue in dozens of diseases) or not. How are their appetites? Stools? Our fuzzes are a still a bit sleepy as it's winter, though they will soon be starting their spring shed, weight loss programs and energies will increase. You've not mentioned anything other than your wee one's bad teeth that might constitute an earlier vet visit. ciao

Whenever I get a new animal, the first thing I do is take them to the vet to be checked for general health and maintenance. Things like ear mites, bad teeth, etc. are best identified early.

Their stools look normal, and Kadie is actually more active than Sadie. Lol. A bit smaller too. Once I figure out how to post the pics from my tablet I will definitely do so, and I'll do my best get a non wiggly one. Lol. She has an appetite, but I do think it hurts her to eat. She tends to favor one side more than the other and she frequently stops to lick. I keep one of their water bottles next to the food dish in the cage, but she seems to prefer the dog's water bowl. Lol. Their poo is normal. There was a day or 2 it was a bit off, but I attributed that to the addition of the Evo.

If you think eating is causing her pain, then take her asap to the vet. A sore mouth and bad teeth can cause all sorts of health issues. I agree with Jennifer, getting a general check up as soon as you can would be beneficial. Ear mites are a real pain and if you've got other pets they all have to be treated. ciao

Congratulations. Ferrets really like drinking from bowls, they can get more water at a time rather than licking and getting a drop each time! So maybe she'd like a water bowl.

Plan to get general checkups for both the 1st week of February. Is there anything that anyone suggest I have the vet test for outside of a regular check up? I was thinking about asking for tests that would reveal adrenal, heart, or insulin issues, just to try to catch anything as early as possible, and I'm planning on scheduling a dental for Kadie, because I know she's going to need one. She isn't drooling at all, which is good, but the condition of her teeth concerns me. I'm also worried about how well she'll be able to eat if she has to have any pulled. She's already missing one of her bottom fangs and part of the too fang on the same side.

In the interim it might be an idea to feed her soft food. Even just wetting the kibble. That's going to hurt her since it's rough on their teeth. As for the fangs, they are only to grasp and kill prey so they do fine without them If she' has to have too many pulled she may need to go on a permanent soft diet, depending on where the teeth are located. A commercial raw is excellent for this.

General check up....the usual, eyes, ears for mites, teeth and you may want a general blood work up. A BG might be a good idea as well as this could tell you if there are any problems with insulinoma. The adrenal panel is hugely expensive and most of us use symptoms to diagnose it. ciao

The adrenal panel is hugely expensive and most of us use symptoms to diagnose it. Especially given the odds of a false negative.

Well then I suppose there will be no adrenal panel unless the Dr thinks it's necessary. Lol. I would like to have a little blood work done, and find out what all can be done about Kadie's poor teeth. I'll take your advice and soften a little kibble in a separate bowl for her.

I was finally able to sneak a couple of pictures of Kadie's teeth while she was asleep in my bathrobe. They're not great but hopefully good enough to show why I'm so concerned.

When I get pics of Sadie's teeth I'll post them in the Aging by teeth thread. I just kind of thought that since this this was the thread I brought up Kadie's teeth on it would be good to post her teeth pics here.

Oh wow! They really are bad. She's also broken both her canines. She definitely needs those seen to.
