i am looking to put some type of (cheap) flooring on the first floor of Molson's cage, where is food and litter are. I was looking into vinyl flooring since it's cheap and easy to put din and take out if i need to and i can just wipe it down when i do my cage cleaning every week. Any thoughts? Better ideas?

First, what type of cage do you have, and what's the floor in it made of?

I put vinyl lino in my guys cage, well it worked for a while. Then they dug it up, ripped it up, and now hove fun crawling under it. But they also stash meat under it, So for a long term floor, I would say no to vinyl.

i have the fiesty cage i think? the bottom is just wires because theres a pan under it. right now i covered it with newspaper because every once in a while Molson decides that going next to his litter is funner... I was going to find a way to tie it down so he cant get underneath it. There isnt a lot of space for him to do so anyways because his bowls and litter are there. I just figured it would look nicer and I could just wipe it down instead of throwing out newspapers every week. (especiallysince after it cant be recycled cause its covered in poop&pee) He's got a carpet on his "bedroom" floor (second floor of the cage) and I tied it down so he doesnt go under it and he doesnt dig in it either, he'd rather go into his box full of soft blankets!

What about that plastic stuff that kinda looks like cardboard. I used to use that before I got an FN in the old ferret cage. It cleans up easily. You can usually get it at a place that makes signs.

I agree with the corrugated plastic. I used it as a wall when I had to block off a part of the room once, works awesome for so many things ferret related. I found it at a hardware store, but you have to phone around since not all carry it. Why not get a bigger litter box and do the carpet thing on the bottom too?

i dont want to put carpet on the floor cause Molson tends to move his meat around and I dont want raw chicken stuck in the carpet lol as for that plastic thing, i have no clue where i could get that lol

What about a piece of melamine cut to size? Or plywood sanded and sealed with several layers of Varnish (to make it easier to wipe down, and keep it from degrading when it is peed on, eaten on, spilled on, etc)?

Oo Oo tiles. Big heavy ones! A piece of plywood or cardboard or such underneath the tiles will help keep leaks from seeping through the cracks and under the cage. They will help keep him cool in the summer too.

I have vinyl adhesive tiles on my ferts cage floor. They are very easy to clean. They will have to be cut to size, but it isnt difficult.

If you have access to cardboard, like if you drink a lot of soda in cases or beer, you could use cardboard and then change it out frequently--instead of washing.

i dont want to use cardboard because it just a) doesnt look nice and b) once its full of poo&pee, i cant recyle it and i just dont like that lol i'm happy to see someones done the vynil and liked it!
for the tiles, wont that be a bit more expensive and harder to cut? i live in a basement and its already pretty cool in the summer, but in the winter it'll be way too cold! (i live in snowy Quebec ! lol)
the plywood sounds like a good idea too...but i cant seem to picture what it would look like lol.
the purpous of me wanting to put flooring in his cage is so that 1-it'll look nice and like a home's flooring 2-easy to clean 3-so i can stop wasting newspaper and such instead of recycling it.

I use short cut pile bath mats as floor covers in my FN cages. A mat size around 30" x 24" cut in half fits nicely on each level. Two pieces cover the full bottom tray or the basement floor with the next level opening (ferrets just push past the opening) or you can fold the corner under at the ramp opening. The short pile prevents any claws from getting stuck. The latex backing prevents slippage of the mats. Have used these mats daily for a couple years for more than ten ferrets and haven't had anybody chew them. I change the mats out as they get soiled. Wipe the cage floor with antibacterial wipe or vinegar solution put down a new mat and voila! Toss the dirty mat in the washer then dryer. A speed cleaned fresh cage! The mats offer traction, warmth, comfort, silence, ease of cleaning, color (for seasons or holidays) and are fairly inexpensive.
Cheers, Kim
