Can ferrets eat occasional sardines in spring water, not oil or salt? Nib seems to like seafood a lot.

yes, but overdoing it can make them smell fishy. They will incorporate the fish oils into their own and you will eventually notice a change in how they smell if you over do it. My home ground meat mix has sardines in it.

And if they decide they like that, why not include some small raw fresh water fish into their diet once a week or so

I'd say once a week is good. Some do rely more on fish in the diet depending on where they live, but like anything else- moderation and variety are the key. You will know if you overdo it from the smell A diet high in fish will come out in the litter box Also- keep in mind most fish is contaminated with mercury, etc. Which is why we always recommend smaller fresh water fish if at all possible.

If you have any fish markets around they can direct you to the appropriate ones.

Ok this brings up a question for me, how do you know which fish are fresh water and which aren't. I know very little about fish, for me the question is usually just battered or crumbed but for the furry ones it's different. I have been getting fish as part of Jelly's diet but have been choosing ones I think are a good size for her at the moment. So far that has been yellow tail and whiting.

hmn. So he gave the sardines a good licking but when I left he'd still not eaten any of it properly. Oh well. I'll try again later

Uhhh let's see... trout, bass, perch, sunfish, catfish are a few things around here that come to mind for fresh water fish.

I give Thor salmon, he loves it. I call it Thor's Sushi. He goes wild when I say Sushi Thor. I have given him peeled shrimp, raw. 2 or 3. I have to wrestle his daddy to get it for him. Can he eat minnows, that you get at a bait store?

Thanks yureiavalon, that gives me a starting point. I know they had trout at the markets and am pretty sure bass and perch shouldn't be hard to find either.

Yup, bait store minnows & creek chubs are o.k. and usually better than feeder gold fish. Put them in a shallow tub and let the ferret fish for his dinner! Its amazing how even a blind ferret can smell the swimming fish and feel the water with their whiskers - a snorkel or two and they'll come up with their catch!
