Update?!?!?!?! BTW start giving the new kit pinkies and fuzzies whole now. Even try small adult mice. The younger they are, the easier it is to introduce new foods. She should take to pretty much anything instantly. So get her eating a wide variety now. This will help you avoid some of the pain of the switch to whole prey later, and will set a good example for her big sisters. Sometimes all it takes is a little competition for some food to motivate them!

Sooo the newbie is eating me outta house and home. They ate a half a lb of ground turkey in the last 15 hours. So far newbie has eaten Pork/freeze dried mush, gizzards, some chicken wing, ground turkey. They are getting chicken thing bone in later today. I will be trying beef in a day or two, followed by pork. Then I'll try heart/liver/mice over the weekend.

Not yet - they wasted all the mice I had no fat, and I need to restock.

Today is pork chunks - they are eating close to a lb a day. Dixie has some whitish stools from too much fat, but they're back to normal now.
Here is my shopping this for the weekend:
some pork picnic, chicken wings, spare ribs, pork tail, turkey wings, CGH, and maybe some beef.
I will hopefully pick up a couple larger mice.

Okayy, soo I might have found an affordable way to get more variety!
There is a raw food co-op style thing in Orlando and they make deliveries to Tampa (about an hour from me). Unfortunately, I'm not able to make the drives myself, but I might be able to find someone in my city who can pick up for me. SO I wanted to get your opinion of what I should get if I order.
I need about 30-40 lbs of meat a month, so I'm hoping to get everything I need for $60 or less. I attached the document with their products. There is just so much to chose from, and I want to make sure I get a good balance of bone, muscle, organ, tastey extras. I would really appreciate your input on what would be a good balance. This probably won't happen for a while, because the deliveries are only made every 2-3 months, but I am so excited!

Oh wow awesome! We don't have something like that here. Candice told me about them and where to look but nothing. lol Ok sooo going down the list.... First of all, what is your goal. Will you be buying a few months' food solely from this? Or will you say buy a month of food, but still supplement from the grocery store? Because that makes a difference. Anything you can normally get at the store (chicken leg for example) I would pass on UNLESS you are: getting a full month;'s supply in proper ratios at once, OR it is cheaper and you want to stock up from the CoOp instead of the store. So, assuming that you will be supplementing from the store I would get anything that you cannot normally get. Going down the list I made comments on each, going off of the basis that you are getting meats you don't normally have access to. If you want to get say a month's worth of meat, then we can go through and create more of a menu formula if you would like.

Thanks for the input. Once I figure out if someone will actually pick up for me, and how often the trips are made, I will decide whether or not I will use solely them or not. I appreciate your advice, I am soo excited!
To the ferrets, Dixie (newbie) has funky stools on and off. She really loves fat and will eat it first before anything else and I think she overloads on it. They got pork chunks yesterday with some eggshell powder on them and she (and everyone else) did great. Today is chicken quarters , and I removed the skin and fat to make sure Dixie doesn't gorge herself on it. Trixie and Pixie are adjusting well, they play and sleep together. I think Dixie is a good match.
I might be buying a large chest freezer and if I do, I can stock up on a lot of those more exotic things and then shop at my local grocery store for staples (unless the Co-op is cheaper).

You named her Dixie!!!! YAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!!!! That is funny about the fat. And the strange poops will probably continue for a while. She is adjusting to the new diet, the new home, and she is growing. It took Kenai's poops quite a while to stabilize! A few months. I am glad she is integrating into your group so well.

So updates!
Girls did fine with chilen quarters! Stools are no longer white - yay! Tonight is turkey chunks with some bone in (mainly the wing tip because the rest is too big). I added some eggshell to the chunks to help with the softer stools they've been having. Dixie and Trixie are digging the turkey! Munching on it now. Well see about Pixie. She likes ground fine, but we've never had turkey chunks before.
Tomorrow is heart and liver day. I don't know how much heart is usually given, but I'm thawing out one pig heart to split three ways. The eart is about the size of a tennis ball, maybe a bit bigger. I also got 2-3 chicken livers for them. I plan to feed those with some turkey wing. If they don't go for it in chunks, I'll probably have to purée it with the turkey.
I've been so busy with school. I am finalizing my thesis info, working in the lab, tutoring, new ferret, so I haven't been updating as much. Hopefully Dixie will start getting into the groove of things and I can relax a bit more.

Thanks! I did have a good day. I slept in, read my book, went horseback riding, played with ferrets, snuggled Shane, watched a movie and had a massage trade. And Shane's mom made a DELICIOUS dinner and the most amazing carrot cake ever with coconut and pineapples in it. MmmmmmMMmmmm!!!!! Yay to turkey chunks! Did Pixie decide to eat some? When I feed chicken heart, I usually make it about half of the meal or more. Koda is slightly chicken sensitive though and he does better with it mixed with some different muscle meats and bones. When I feed pork/beef heart I often make it about 1/3 or less of the meal. Pork Heart I am still experimenting with, beef Koda is very sensitive to so if/when he gets it it is just a VERY little bit. It will depend on how often they are getting it too. Like you could do one meal of mostly heart one day, with the other meal part heart, and little to no heart the next day. Or you could do a fraction of every meal heart. The taurine is good for them, so it is hard to over do it on heart. BUT watch their poopies and if they start to get too liquidy then you will want to back off a bit, or try feeding the heart with a higher amount of bone for the heart meals.

Did Pixie decide to eat some? Yes she did eventually eat some. Question: If I take meat out to thaw, how long can it stay in my fridge before it's bad?

Good - you deserved a good birthday!
I am waiting until they get a little hungrier before I try the heart/liver. They were snacking on the turkey wing this afternoon.
