It has been a while since I've been on a ferret forum. After so many failed attempts at breeding mice, I'm trying...yet again. At first I was going to be breeding the mice only for my snakes (as I have 18 of them!) but I've been thinking a lot about putting the ferrets back on a raw diet. Then I thought, why not a whole prey diet. I know at least two of my ferrets LOVE mice. It shouldn't be too hard to get them to eat whole prey. So this will be a log of my journey breeding mice. I have a friend who has volunteered to build me a rack but I told him I wouldn't be able to use it until I move this summer (space! I need space!) When we move I will have a room dedicated to my snakes (which do not take up much room at all) and to my breeding feeder animals. Mice and rats will be my main focus as I also need them for my snakes, and I will also have a few breeding groups of various other animals for the ferrets.
3/25/11-
Groups: 1
Males: 1
Females: 6
One of the females has already had a litter but due to major heat fluctuations the litter died off. (The room went up to over 95F) The room is still experiencing temperature fluctuations due to the fact I have to keep the room at least 80 right now because I'm trying to get my snake incubator temperature to stabilize. I'm moving the incubator downstairs (hopefully today) where the temp will stabilize without any problems. Once that happens, I can turn off the heater in the room and the room will settle down in temperature and I should start seeing the mice reproduce.
Once we move this summer, the room the mice will be housed in will always be kept at a steady 75. In this house, the upstairs always fluctuates and it is extremely hard to keep it at a steady temperature. While the downstairs is always between 70-74, the upstairs can rise to over 90 in the summer without much problem. We are very glad we will be moving.
I will keep this log updated whenever interesting things happen (new litters, new breeders, new set ups)
Here is the current group. You can't see all of them as they really like that log. I'll be adding more into it. It just got cleaned.
***As a note. All of these mice are related. They are siblings from a mother x son breeding, so I will be adding new blood for the next generation. Any females I hold back from these litters will be placed with a brand new male. I want to inbreed the mice as little as possible but will be doing so on occasion.
