Does anyone use the big dog pack of revolution to divide up and dose their ferrets with? I know my vet uses the bigger sized cat packages, but with 16 I figured it might be easier (maybe cheaper) if I bought a big dog sized pack and then divided it up and dosed appropriately. It'll be heart worm and flea season soon ugh..
If anyone does, how much do you use?

Sorry, kids- not a clue! It's too cold here for fleas to survive, and we(thank heavens!), don't have much heartworm. Although that could well be changing with the climate, so I think I'm going to ask my vet when I go back in tomorrow! As for the dog sized pkg, acodlin- why not call the vet and ask what the dosage should be, or even if they can have the dog one?

The Dr I work for did some research and found that you should only use the one for cats. You also have to use one dose for EACH ferret because if you split it up, the effectiveness for prevention against heartworms decreases. That can get really pricey.
What I do: I get liquid ivermectin and give it orally each month. I get what maybe is about a 6 month supply for all three of my girls for something like less than 10 bucks. I also use advantage for cats and split up one tube between my three. Haven't had any flea problems since. However, one of my girls did have some irritation the second time I used it so watch out not to put on too much. Make sure you don't bathe them right before or after the application. Gotta wait two days before or after, if at all.

Hmm...according to my vet, the Revolution cat and dog formulas are identical except for the concentration and I use the dog pack and divy it up, have for a couple years now with no issue. I know Frontline and Advantage are definitely no-goes on the dog formula though. This link ( www.drugs.com/vet/revolution.html) also shows it as the same drug for dogs and cats, as well as dosing amounts by lb if you scroll down a bit. It's in mg, which will need to be converted based on on mg/ml dosage in the bottle size you buy since different sizes have different concentrations. I buy the 3-dose 40-85lb dog size and my vet has me dose as follows for that specific pack: .37 ml per cat, .05ml per male ferret, and .03ml per female ferret. I get 5 months of coverage out of a single pack for 3 cats and 3 ferts. I do like doing it by weight because otherwise I'm concerned about over dosing and it allows me to cover more critters for less money...I also don't dose over the winter since it's too cold for fleas to survive here and I like to give their little bodies a break from chemicals. Edit: Forgot to mention, Revolution is in an alcohol base, so my vet gave me an airtight rubber-stoppered vial to put leftovers in in between doses to keep it from evaporating away, and I also keep the vial in the fridge to keep the drug from breaking down.

my vet told me never to use the dog flea treatments on ferrets. he told me only to use the flea treatments made for kittens i buy the advantage for kittens and put just three drops (not the whole tube) between the shoulder blades. i have been doing that for over 7 years (whenever we have a flea infestation) and it works pretty well on my ferrets. i have never used revolution. the dog also uses advantage but he is a 50 pound border collie. i would check with your vet before using any flea treatments made for dogs on your ferrets. they all sell versions for kittens

Justhannah, that's good info to know. I wonder if the concentration can be too strong for some ferret's skin? I did read the study he pulled off the veterinary information network on revolution and it did say that splitting up the cat dosage between multiple ferrets would be good enough for fleas but not for heartworm. I don't know why they didn't recommend the one for dogs in the study.
Miamiferret, I see we're doing the same thing! To me it seems to be the most cost-effective. I haven't been giving the advantage every single month though, since I don't have other animals that could bring in fleas. I only needed it when I got Midna from the SPCA and her bedding came with free fleas! >_<

i never use it every month either. no need. i only use it if and when i see fleas. i barely ever bathe my ferrets so the stuff doesn't wear off as quick.

The concentration has nothing to do with it. For example, 50 mg/ml * 1 ml = 50 mg medication 25 mg/ml * 2 ml = 50 mg medication It works out to the same amount of the drug by altering the dosage to the concentration. Thanks for the info on the dosing, I'll have to talk to mg vet about it

I dont really worry about fleas or ticks, Revolution is what my vet wants me to use for the heartworm. Miamiferret what kind of oral heart worm meds do you use?

same thing that you are using. ivermectin. the vet mixes it in his office and it is a clear liquid. it is a teeny tiny bit that i have to give him every month. i think it is like .05 ml once a month. the concentration is written on the bottle because he makes it there in his office. if anyone needs it let me know.
