Do ferrets use their claws / nails to hold their food or rip if open while they are eating? In all the videos and pictures I've seen of ferrets eating raw they don't seem to do this.

I was just curious. I thought this was normal behavior for most carnivores and in most videos I've seen with them eating frankenprey they just seem to chew and pull or try to cut it with their back scissor like teeth. I would watch and think "why aren't they using their claws to hold it for more leverage"? I just thought it was odd that I'd never seen them do it.

Mine don't but any large items are hooked to the cage. I've wondered about it myself because my dogs will use their dews on large items and my cat sometimes holds her food down.

Loki only does this behavior with his duck strips, I assumed it was because they were flat and hard to get a grip on.
Either way, I think its cute as dickens.

I think they don't like to use paws with raw because most ferrets seems to go eww gross when their paws get wet or yucky.

I don't see Tadakichi do this, but Akiko does on all but the smallest meat chunks. She also has a broken canine and one of her back teeth was removed during a cleaning, so she probably really needs that extra leverage. I have to clean meat gunk out of her claws on a regular basis too.

I assumed it was because cats and dogs lay down more to eat but a ferret stands more
