Was curious if anyone out there had this problem - Bandit has been strictly on raw soupie for a few days now, and he LOVES it (but of course my other 2 HATE it ). Anywho, starting last night he has developed a rather bad smell, I think from the raw as it is the only change he has been through. The smell smells like animal poopie (not fert poopie but like dog poopie if that makes sense) and it eminates from his glands on his neck. It smells HORRIBLE. Is this normal for ferrets just starting on raw or is something else the issue here?

His body is just getting rid of toxins from the kibble. More frequent bedding washes help too.

It's detox, and it will get worse before it gets better. Not all ferrets go through this, but most do seem to. Our latest four, 3 did one didn't. And the litter box will start to reek, just to let you know It usually goes away in a month or so once kibble is completely out of the diet.

My girls have been on Raw for two weeks now but luckily no detox, just a totally neutral smell. No more horrible old kibble reek.

Sonny's crap smelled like a combination of rotten fish and the monkey cages at the Bronx Zoo. detoxing off of kibble. makes you wonder what they really put into that stuff. no wonder kibble fed ferrets smell worse.

...I am so lucky my girl is coming to me eating raw/whole prey. Though there is the two rescue boys, we'll be offering raw to them too. I'm sure they'll smell *just* lovely.

Just for a note on how long the smell takes to subside - they babies are JUST starting to smell better. They still smell worse than my boys but the smell has significantly improved.

Things will also get rank with a change in raw. The Czech hob has produced some outstanding litterbox odors in the last week. I don't feed the same "brand" of chicken wings that Joan does and they had turkey legs a couple of days this week and I introduced NV lamb into his diet. So, he goes to the box and I leave the house for a while.

It was awful for our guys. They smelled terribly like little kid sweat. That really musky, disgusting, almost sickening smell little kids get from running around all day and not taking a bath. Gross. Sweaty and gross. Eventually it went away though! (Obviously I could not emphasize enough just how gross the smell was)

HAHAHA ;D Yes, I would imagine that would be horrendous. Well, I'm glad this post came back up again as I was just thinking about this a few hours ago. So, my 3 boys have been fully on raw soupie for about 2 weeks now (Bandit for over a month) and I have noticed a couple of things - 1) Their poos STINK to HIGH HEAVEN on raw, at least for a few weeks or so. 2) Their poos are like GLUE, or black TAR if you don't get them up immediately. I swear, I make the soupie myself but I still ask them what they are eating to make their poos so darn hard to clean up!!! 3) They themselves REEK! Bandit, 5 weeks later, is just now starting to smell better, more like himself! 4) And as I have learned today, even their pee REEKS! I have been really sick for a couple of days and so out of commission, so my BF has been in charge of clean up. Well, as per the norm he hasn't been keeping up with it so there is TONS of tar poops for me to clean up when I'm back to 100% and I found loads of dried and standing pee in the back part of the kitchen and that area REEKED. Even after my sicka** cleaned it up I could still smell it thru my stuffed up nose!!! My BF sux when it comes to cleanin up after the boys lemme tell ya! And now is the worst time to not be cleaning up after them. BLEH

Yep, i had to tweak my recipe and gradually reduce organ and increase bone in the mix to avoid the tarry poops.....my crew has no body odor though. The litterbox will let ya know how the meals are setting in tho LOL!

Definitely sounds like the organ content may be too high Try reducing it by about 1/4 and see how that goes.
