I've had several breeds of dogs and had no trouble training them. We have a two year old unfixed male shih tzu and frankly other than being housebroken and sitting to get his dinner, he refuses to listen to anything. He is like having a cat in a dog suit. I've never seen a dog with a attitude. Don't get me wrong we adore him and when his hair is cut he is a very snuggly dog but incredibly frustrating. Any training tip would be appreciated.

Every tzu I have ever fostered was incredibly sweet and incredibly dumb. I guess my best suggestion is if he is food motivated, treat, treat, treat. Do you have access to a training club? You could always do a basic obedience class and get him on the right road. I always find them fun and a good bonding experience.

I would suggest that maybe you talk to a breeder or someone who works with this breed. I just know they can't be as stupid as my mother's dog . I've trained some stubborn breeds in my life but when it came to training her...I would sooner herd cats ciao

Spot is far from stupid. He just doesn't have the usual owner pleasing attitude our other breeds do. It is like he was a really bad cat and got reincarnated as a tzu. Our poodle, chihuahua, beagle, feist & dalmatian all do exactly what we tell them to even if they would prefer not to.
His favorite treats are raw veggies especially potatoes and I'm not sure how often he should have those.
We live 30miles away from everything so I don't really have access to training clubs. I'll have to look to see if there are any breed specific training classes as I feel I have basic training down pat as my others are doing fine but I'm sure they would want proof of vaccinations for us to participate and I don't do much so i don't take my dogs places. Maybe i can find something online.

I wish I could help, I had the same experience with a shih tzu. Her, and a traumatic brain damaged boxer, were the two most difficult dogs to train I have ever experienced.
Good Luck!

Yes I thought I'd put it out there to see if it was just my little ball of attitude but seems to be a breed specific issue. I haven't found anything helpful on line yet but I'll keep looking. I'll think harder before accepting an offer to get a free one again ;D In fact there is someone who has a standing offer to give one to my daughter which we haven't accepted. Kinda glad I didn't go out and buy one. Not that i do that sort of thing often, only twice in 12 years.
