Some ferrets just have dirtier ears than others I know my girls all groom each other, which I'm sure cuts down on ear gunk. Some buddies might not be so helpful ;D

I had no idea there was a yes way and a no way to cut nails! ;D For me a yes is a good quick snip and a no would me cutting the quick (I have never done this thank goodness!) I just have my bf hold them by their upper body and support their bum and I snip snip snip. BTW Mike I used to scruff too. It was the only way they would stay still! I will (actually my bf) will still scruff if they get too wiggly but they have learned if they stay still they dont get scruffed! We Rarely ever need to anymore! Smart Ferrets!

I cut the yes way. But he is really easy, he really doesn't wiggle, or even care... But on the other hand my dog is a whole different ball game... He absolutely hates it and we literally have to hold him down... Not fun, but it has to be done...

Klaudia, I was reading about a way to help reinforce nail cutting as a positive experience for dogs. It involves doing a single clip, then a couple treats. Wait for a bit, clip and treat. After a while they start associating the two.

i also cut the "No" way, but it's not that close to the quick. i agree with mavrick813, i use the nail file too. my one little girl, who's nearly two, still has "kit" nails, they're so small and sharp!! if i didn't file them down, i'd look like i got into a fight!! ;D

Being a farrier I am a tad ocd about nail trimming which means I trim the "yes" way. I just pocked up some bird gravel paper and will be putting that on the shelf in each cage where there is an entry tube. My thinking is that this may help self trim their nails.

I believe my boyfriend cuts the "no" way but he doesn't go anywhere near the quick, we've never had anyone bleed yet. Nicked the nerve a couple of times when someone jerked away at the most inopportune moment though. Speaking of nail cutting, one of my ferrets has suddenly become terrified of it lately. Poor Mayhem, for some reason has started freaking out whenever we try and do her nails. We have never hit her quick or hurt her before. She used to sit fairly still with the 'tone on the tummy trick, albeit gripping my boyfriend's hand with her feet the whole time. Now as soon as we set her in my lap on her back and squirt some tone on her, she bolts away and struggles like mad when we catch her. I thought maybe the tone was too cold, so I tried warming the bottle up a little. Nope. I tried holding her different ways in case on her back was hurting her... nope. Scruff and dangle, she knocks your hands away with her front legs. Letting her stand on all 4 and lap from a bowl... nope, we run away. Trying to gently pin her against your shoulder or chest... nope, we write away out of our grip. I have no idea what's wrong with her now, and her claws are murderously sharp now. We have to trim everyone every 2-3 weeks or else they end up with machete nails. And speaking of ears, Chell's were soooo dirty this week I noticed, I flushed them with cleaner twice. No one grooms the poor deaf girl, not even Glados.

Okay, I've found that they don't grow slower but they don't curve as much, which is nice.
