Ferreholic, I don't know if the pellets are "safer" than the newspaper but I use the hardwood kind, not the pine, and it has almost no odor of it's own. I have not read anything on the hardwood being bad for ferrets. I can't remember the brand,,,,I get mine at Tractor Supply and they make it for horse stalls as well as for wood burning stoves. The bag I buy is 100% hardwood pellets..nothing else.

I don't mind yesterdays news but cheaper and better is Petco's brand of paper pellets. I like the clumping stuff, use swheat scoop for my cat but they track it too much, worlds best I can't get locally and wood pellets just turn to sawdust too fast and I have to change boxes daily.

Yesterdays News IS horrible. Ainslie hated the litter. Absolutely hated it. She would only go in it like, three times and then poop outside the cage after that. I use Petite something, but while Ainslie likes it alot better than before, she will only go in it a certain number of times (like 7) before she'll resort to pooping on the cage floor. I don't know if she's picky or not with the litterbox (which i doubt since she poops in the same exact spot regardless of where she is in the room). But i do know definitely she is picky with the litter. So hopefully, after i switch to WBCL, she'll settle down and use the freakin box regardless.

The only downside the Worlds best is that is tracks, so it's good to have a small handheld vaccum to keep the cage tidy.

I don't mind the tracking..I normally take the pan out and shake it out and wash it anyways, since you know when ferrets poop they pee at the same time...
something i find hilariously funny and somewhat perturbing as well....

For the longest time I was using Petco's litter, which works just fine. But I found that my life became much easier if I just put down newspaper over the corners they used and a little towel or bathmat for them to wipe when they left. Pick up the used paper, squirt/wipe underneath, put down new paper, done. The free classified newspaper bins are my source.
Someone here mentioned that's what they do, so thanks for the idea. It's much easier.

If you have a pet supplies plus near you, they have something called fresh news. It's a pelleted litter just like yesterdays news but has baking soda built in. I actually found it to be more absorbent than yesterdays news, and a little bit cheaper. It was $10 for a medium sized bag that lasted me about 2 months for 3 ferrets when scooping once per day.
I've tried all of the scoopable litters like worlds best, swheat scoop and the generic variants but the tracking is just unbelievable. I must have the messiest girls ever because I was having to vacuum every day.. and I have a small room so I don't really have anywhere to keep a vacuum nearby.
It's weird that your bag of yesterdays news smells bad.. I didn't find it to really have any odor at all. Maybe it was a bad bag?

It doesn't have much of an odor but then after being around it for a long time you can pick up a distinct odor!! lol I went out and bought worlds best cat litter! It's pretty pricey actually but I don't mind since I just got a job at the pet shop (only sells food not pets:)) It's quite good! I'm happy with how absorbent it is but again, it does track.... small handheld vacuum on the shopping list! Thanks all

I haven't actually had any issues with Yesterday's News, like at all >.> Maybe it's just cause I haven't tried anything better yet.
