A quick backstory :
We lived in our capital city, in a house renovated as an apartment. The landlord lived on the main floor. His family had owned the house for 3 generations, and he lived there with 2 of his sons, his daughter-in-law, and their family friend. This landlord owned a herding dog that was incredibly well trained. He never entered a room/apartment or even his dog house without having permission, never barked unless it was someone he didn't know, never took food unless he had permission. Very well trained. Our landlord actually also trained him to bring stray kittens into the yard where our landlord would shoot them and dispose of them in the dumpster. A situation like this occurred only once while we lived there, resulting in my partner and I rescuing 2 very traumatized kittens from the gentle but overzealous jaws of the guard dog. We took them back to my former foster mother who has experiences with cats. My partner decided he was desperately in love with the male kitten, and so now, we have a baby tabby that we are set to bring home on Friday.
Now, I have read that cats and ferrets do not get along. Seeing as I have no experience with this, I will ask. Does anyone here have a cat that they allow to mingle with their ferrets? Is this a misconception or are they really not a good fit with each other? The cat and our fuzzies will be closely monitored until he is old enough to be declawed (my partner thinks this is cruel, and I agree, but not as cruel as I've seen cats be with something they believe is food or a toy, even if it's a living creature). I don't want to run the risk of someone being gored open during play time. I know Nissa and Jayne will likely be able to hold their own and won't take any BS from the cat, but Koda is incredibly trusting and I feel like he would make the mistake of putting himself in a situation he can't come back from. So I need advice on if/how to introduce them.
Long post, I apologize. Thanks again for any advice!
