What is a natural ear cleaner for my ferrets ears? I use qtips and a pet store solution but it smells like alcohol and seems like its irritating.. Although I do not ever go down into the ear canal. So I'd like something natural.
My albino Mali's ear is kinda inflamed and has a smell and produces more wax then the other ear for a few months now. He would not let me clean it last night at all.
I asked my vet about an ear infection and she said since he has been sick with sadness since Kahlua my other ferret left us and Mali's body just went out of wack... But Mali is feeling and looking a lot healthier now for the past month and a half I think?

Considering the amount of pain or annoyance he feels about you cleaning it I would be tempted to have it swabbed and a culture done. Lady "B" had an ear infection a couple of months ago. I couldn't get ahead of it and had to take her to the vet to get a oral prescription and some ear drops. She was feeling better in a couple of days and there has been no recurrence of the issue since (she did a full 14 days of antibiotics). An ear infection is not something that should be ignored. One of our membership didn't catch an infection fast enough and it cost her ferret dearly (brain damage) and cost her considerably financially. There are some things one shouldn't leave to see if it will get better on it's own ciao

I wish the vet would have taken it seriously when I was there Back to the vet he goes. Still though, what is a natural ear cleaner? I know there's a common oil available to use?

Simple olive oil. Put a couple drops in, rub it in then leave it til the next day. Put another drop in, then clean. What did the vet say about the infection anyway?

A very dilute solution of water and organic ACV works well too. ACV will help kill bacteria and other things not friendly in the ears.

The vet said pretty much that his oils where high because he was ill. She said she would look into it after a phone call.

Extra virgin olive oil is fine if they'll eat it.

Any oil should be fine. Most ferrets don't like the taste of extra virgin oil

Would you just use the olive oil for an ear infection or would an infusion of some sort be a better idea as a first attempt to quell the ear infection.

I'm not sure anything but antibiotics will work for an ear infection.

If there's a possibility of an ear infection, your ferret needs to see the vet immediately and be started on antibiotics. acodlin here had a fuzz with that, but since it's uncommon the vet didn't believe that was the problem and didn't treat it. Her little one wound up becoming septic and suffered brain damage including deafness and blindness.

So I finally got Mali back into the vets yesterday and he has ear mite eggs. I assume its from the baby ferret Cooper. The vet said she saw no adults and that the infection is not that bad and prescribed him 2 doses of Revolution. One for this month and another for next month. I am going to take Cooper in for his check up in a week or so. $$$ I was kind of upset with my vet since she did not listen to me in the first place there was something wrong with his ears last time I was at the vet office... Just makes me mad and makes me re assure myself that I will fight my vet next time I know im right.

You do realize all mammals in the house have to be treated at the same time? Otherwise the mites will just be passed back and forth.
