I had a dark panda named Smudgie. By the time he was 1 year old he was a DEW with little black spots on his nose.

Silvers, pandas and some of the other more exotic markings are very unstable and these ferrets can change colours which will seem almost at will. Porthos who was a gorgeously marked silver about 6 months after he came to live with me Porthos about 8 months later after putting on his new winter coat These ferrets with the exotic markings, like Lady "B", who when she came in was this colour with a beautiful dark stripe down her back and a "M" on her forehead for meanie You can watch as the dark tail started to fade away, the marking down her back at this point is gone Until it became this. Of course now, she's adrenal and has no undercoat and looks pink Some sables will roan out or get silver pants as they get older but the darker the sable the more stable the colour. They will change their masks and caps but their colours will remain the same. In this photo every one of the "white" or DEWs that you see are or were silvers. Usually, if you purchase a silver within 2 to 4 yrs you will get a DEW. Often, not always these ferrets are deaf and unfortuately usually not as long lived as their sable counterparts I have never got a silver to live to a ripe old age ciao

That first picture made my heart skip a beat--looks exactly like my Dutzi and has the same color collar!! (Dutzi has a harness though).

I bought Tadakichi off craigslist and while we were emailing back and forth, the girl sent me pictures of a silver with blaze and mentioned the pics were old...when we met, I was a little shocked to get a DEW with a silver tail ;D. A year and a half later, he's 100% white except for maybe 5 black guard hairs on his back and tail. He'll be 4 this June.

Baby Pandora, the silver in the side of the pic was Hobo when she was young, around a year and she lost most of that, lightened up a ton although I can't find any good adult pics of her Pandora now

Wow, I am more and more convinced Paulie is a "black mitt/mutt" not a silver. He is three, and although he is somewhat lighter, really he is still a lovely silver/black color (his tail is still very black). Paulie's mask changes with the season, solid color in winter and white mask in summer. What a dramatic change in all of those guys.
