Agreed- the article was just listing some of the more Common ones. And I don't know about you, but I don't often carry fruits, vegetables, or household cleaners in my purse

Perfumes, body washes, shampoos, cleaners are some more. Basically anything scented can contain EO's

I was putting off starting a thread about all the things that are toxic to ferrets. This thread consolidated it. Anything that has that "natural" scent. They put eo's in laundry products, toothpastes , you know lavender, eucalyptus, lemongrass, marigold, honeysuckle, etc, etc, etc. My waterless handcleaner (in my purse) has lavender and citrus-it's from a healthfood store. Perfumes, baby wipes, moisturizers are all stuff in a purse.

Don't forget makeup, which is commonly greasy - especially flavored lipsticks/chap sticks/lip balms that may contain those deadly artificial sweeteners. I always have chap stick - and they're EASY to open - greasy and sweet tasting -jennifer

I feel kind of goofy for saying this, but early on, my purse was of immense interest to Artie for it's "oh boy! new smells!". So I ferret proofed it. He gets to clean my purse (boredom antidote), and I don't keep anything in it that he likes. I've been lucky he doesn't go for eo's. He does the ferret head shake for those, and diverts to the receipts and wallet. I feel like I have given him a new toy every time I come back in, but (to be on the safe side) have any of your ferts simply changed their minds about what they hate to smell, and started to mess with them? He does head shakes with hot coffee, hand sanitizer bottle and bath water unfailingly.

I hate to sound ignorant but why exactly are EOs dangerous to ferrets? Trust me, I believe you when you say that they are I just am a curious person and like to know the "whys" of everything!

Here are some threads that explain it holisticferret.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=care&action=display&thread=4503holisticferret60.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=rules&action=display&thread=6901To quote heather "Ferrets cannot tolerate EO's, their systems are very similar to cats in their ability to tolerate foreign substances. They cannot process it properly and it accumulates in their livers and kidneys. Treat ferret like you would cats with EO's.... don't do it. Ferrets cannot metabolise EO's either. You will not see anything to begin with (same as cats, short of respiratory issues) but seemingly it builds up in their livers and kidneys as their bodies try and move the toxins. They can't flush it, maybe it has something to do with how carnivores metabolise water but either way EO's are toxic. "
