As long as the syringe is sideways across their mouths, or even pointed slightly forward(even better), odds of aspirating are pretty remote. As for the bonding/training, it's likely not going to progress much til they've had a few days without the meds.

Good to know! Maybe I'll just stick with the current meds then and have them hate me until it's over ;D

[/IMG] If the meds don't kick in a few days I'm gonna have to bring him back and have them check his lungs again. The vet said they sounded clear and they looked okay on the xray I took (wasn't the greatest xray - kind of blurry ;D) but the poor little man is not happy
Remember, if this is a virus you won't see any improvement. You will just have to keep a close eye on him that it doesn't progress and have him wait it out. "Clavamox is an antibacterial, not an antiviral. Amoxicillin is a bacteriacidal in action and acts through the inhibition of biosythesis of cell wall mucopeptide of susceptible micro-organisms. The action of clavulanic acid extends the antimicrobial spectrum of amoxicillin to include bacteria resistnat to amoxicillin and other antibiotics" I know this is very difficult but there is really no solution other than to keep him comfortable and rested. The only solution that I've found to this is Ambertechs Vibactra which does appear to work on certain viruses. ciao

I read that cats can be dosed with the amino acid lysine to help clear up URIs. I think lysine inhibits some viral replication. Something to look into, maybe ?

When one of my kids are sick - I make like a koolaid drink with baby food and warm it up - I will syringe feed if necessary - I do these so they get extra fluids - also they get regular soup more often - I will do this 3 to 4 times a day. NO i do not use koolaid - its more of a flavored water -using chicken baby food

Kool-aid? I take it you aren't referring to mixing it with the powdered drink!

Good point about the viruses. We have lysine at my work for cats... I'm not sure how much would be safe to use in ferrets though. I think I'll try the hot shower steam trick to help clear him up a bit. He seems better tonight so hopefully it will pass soon! They are drinking lots of water and eating soupies so I'm too worried about dehydration at this point

Mojito hates the syringe. It was an epic battle every pred dose, until I had an idea... Simple idea but it makes a huge difference. I started giving him fish oil from the syringe- I do it at such random intervuls that now, he never knows if I'm going to give him nasty Meds or a treat. He opens everytime w/o a fuss, u just have to be able to be quick w/ the syringe. I always give him non-food treats after too so he knows he's been a good boy (like a short walk outside or extra scratchies). Basically, i try my best to make him see the syringe as a good thing. If ur kids are as treat (be it the food or non food variety) driven as him, it's just going to take extra tlc, time, patients.

Sorry, I know this an old thread, but wanted to let you know how I do our meds. I have one on twice a day prednisilone and one on once a day Lasix. I bought a package of the small plastic containers (about the same size restaurants use to put condiments in). I put in a tbs of chicken or turkey Beechnut baby food, a touch of olive oil, squirt their med in the mixture, fill to the top with warm water and mix thoroughly. I sit on the couch with them while they eat. Totally stress-free with no worries of aspiration. I know there are some that won't eat it, but if yours is already eating baby food, you probably won't have a problem.

As long as they are willing to eat the entire thing that does work

That's the key, and why I only make a small amount. I will say that in the last year I've caught them after they've eaten and they didn't lick their concoction clean a couple times
