I always wondered about eggs and ferrets. It's good to know. Eggs are great. They are full of Omega 3's and helpful when the little guys are grooming. Just keep it to about one egg a week, per ferret. You will see funkier Poos after an egg meal. Mine don't like beef, so I always whip up a raw egg and add some warm water to it and then pour it over the beef.

By "whole egg" do you mean the shell as well? I usually just lightly whisk the egg yolk and white together, its a treat for my ferrets so its usually 1 egg on a plate (sometimes added water) and the 3-4 ferrets go at it.
I just read a post on tumblr saying you HAVE to feed the shell in order for it to be safe if you feed whites as well. Is that true?
If my ferrets share the plate, and one ferret eats more white than yolk is that going to make them sick? They are not fed all the time. But how would you know if the ferret had a biotin deficiency? I had a ferret recently pass away, this isn't something I need to worry about is it?
thanks in advance

I had a ferret recently pass away, this isn't something I need to worry about is it? thanks in advance Whole egg is usually simply egg whites and egg yolks together. Some people, including myself blend the entire egg though, but the shell isn't necessary. The shells can also be saved and used for egg shell powder. It makes a good temporary bone meal alternative before getting ferrets on bones. May I ask where on tumblr you saw this? The shell isn't necessary, but the yolk MUST be fed with the whites. The whole egg (Whites+Yolk) is what is recommended, that way its balanced. Whites on their own is not recommended. To avoid ferrets eating more whites then yolk, people tend to whisk the egg up. Biotin deficiency may result in Alopecia, Hyperkeratosis, Graying of fur, Conjunctivitis, and Fatty Liver. Biotin toxicity has nto been reported in ferrets. (BDF3) Other symptoms of biotin deficiency are: Rashes or skin conditions, Fine and brittle fur, Hair loss or total baldness (alopecia), Anemia, Fungal infections, Lethargy/Fatigue, Anorexia/Changes in appetite, etc. Yes, Artificial light can increase the chances of adrenal disease in ferrets. Natural light cycles are important and play an important role in the reproduction of the ferret and overall health of the ferret.

If I only feed eggs occasionally and lets say at times some ferrets at have had more whites then others what's the chances that one of mine has a deficiency?
One of my Ferrets has greying hair on his butt, hes a sable. Should j be worried? My Ferrets are kibble fed. (I would feed raw if I could, but I cannot currently) how much egg white would make them sick?
Also. Could you send me the link to the study of natural lighting so I can read about it? In Ferrets for Dummies it states there are possible links, but that it hasn't been proven. So I would like to read about it.

The issue with egg whites are when they are fed alone and in excess. Otherwise no issues And the greying you are seeing is quite normal for mill ferrets. Their colours aren't "stable", meaning they change over time. as for the lighting, that is how mills like marshall's bring their ferrets into season artificially to breed all year long. Longer photoperiods simulate longer days, and breeding seasons. Hormones from the hypothalamus to to the pituitary gland, then to the adrenal glands, and to the reproductive organs. When the longer periods of light are combined with missing gonads, the adrenal glands start to become hyperstimulated and over time develop tumours. www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=11+2061&aid=522

Some ferrets have their seasons backwards (I have one like this). She has a thin coat in winter and and heavy coat in summer.

You're asking questions and trying to learn so that tells me that you care enough to do your research and learn what is best for yours. I also have one that had her seasons backwards but she seems to have reversed that this winter. Mine are Mill Ferrets and that's not unusual for those from Ferret Mills. Is yours from a Breeder? I'll tag crazylady a Breeder, for you. She's been online this morning and is so experienced.

I was making merangues once, so I whisked up egg white and folded the yolk in and the Ferrets seemed to like it. Is that safe? Would the air affect them at all?

My Ferrets are Marshalls D: I just don't want to make any situation worse or be naive. But I also don't want to stress about their well being all the time. I had one recently pass and I've just noticed a lot of things I feel I could improve on.

I assume even if they're kibble fed, the odd egg is safe?

Yes it is fine to give kibble fed ferrets raw eggs
Although expensive, you can feed your ferret quail eggs , too. They are very nutritious. I give two to three a piece to my Annabelle who loves quail eggs. You could also spread them out through the week and give as a snack.
