Please do not give vaseline on a regular basis, it prevents nutritional absorbtion. Only use it when a problem has occured such as a suspected blockage. Use pumpkin for bowel care ciao

Have you noticed that when your ferrets eat, their neck fur fluffs out? Artie's does, I thought it was just the angle of his neck, but I smoothed it down and it fluffed right back out again as he ate.

1. Thanks for the 'tone and nail trim technique. Works like a charm.
2. Regarding 'tone, I hadn't given him any for a few days and he did something super well behaved, so I gave him a little and he got it and just relaxed. The reaction was really close to the one you see when you get a nice shoulder rub at the end of the day? Just sigh and deflate. He was holding his head over the edge of a box to look at me and just relaxed, like,"Aw, that hit the spot." Is that weird? It looked like a craving reaction to me. I will be more cognizant of 'tone use in the future, certainly. Maybe 'tone is like ferret beer.. who knows.

My noodles has realy dirty ears. He gets black looking dried up ear wax all the time. The vet has checked for mites and for other infections, but nothing came up. He just produces a lot of wax. He probably never had his ears cleaned the first two years of his life and is a Marshall's ferret, so he is fixed. I've been trying to clean them weekly, but I'm going to give the oil in the ear a try. I'd love for his mates to have a go at it.

Out of curiosity- has he ever had his ears flushed? Mites can sometimes get stuck behind all that black crud, and since it's in the way, they can't be spotted with a normal swab.

I was wondering that too This time of year is bad for ferret ear crud, even the alters are producing more oils and it seems to ooze out their brains Strangely enough, Odin has had relatively good ears this year...Lady "B" who like the last time she got her DES implant has turned orange and has really gross ears ciao

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is an ear flush? I've been trying to deal with Draco's mites with limited success, I clean them each night, but by the next cleaning they look like I never touched them. His previous owners were pretty neglectful, so I doubt he's had his ears cleaned very often (my theory is also supported by the way he reacts to having his ears cleaned, you would think I was trying to murder him ;D) So I'm pretty sure he probably has a lot of gunk in his ear canal that I can't see.

The vet will have to do that, to make sure no damage is done. Usually it's when there is crud blocking the ear canal. Otherwise infections, or even mites, can exist behind it. For the mites, you'll likely need medication to irradicate them. I get mine from the vet.
