My present vet always wants them fed. She says the odds of vomiting with these little ones are very remote, and they've found by having eaten prior, they seem to have more strength for the surgery itself. With Dr. Matieri, I don't think she wants them to. When I was going to that clinic, Sinnead had to have blood work done(she needs a bump sedation for it ), and the receptionist tried telling me that she shouldn't eat at least 6 hours beforehand? The vet corrected it to 2 hours. Well I did call and they wanted me to feed them but nothing after 7am (his surgery was at 9:30) so not bad. So I gave him a mouse, but he was more interested in running around =[ so sadly he didn't even eat it.. As for bloodwork, I don't know about ferrets, but for dogs, they shouldn't eat for at least 12 hours, because food can effect so much. so 6 hours wouldn't be too bad - i'd imagine.. I brought some food for him too, and he chowed down pretty good, everyone said how awesome he was and how well he eeats (you don;t gain a pound in 6 months with a bad appetite!!) And thanks for all the well wishes guys, The surgery went well, and i'm hoping that whatever it was is now gone. The incision is REALLY small. so i'm happy, I get sick looking at big nasty ones. He's super sleepy too, so I get good cuddle times right now =] ahah Sly got in at 9, surgery at 930 and was out of surgery and recovering from anesthetic by 1130 I sadly never got to get him till 4 because they wanted to make sure the swelling balloon didn't come back. I actually love Dr. Materi so much =] she saved me so much money. By doing a surgery it would have costed upwards to 800-1200 (that could include the reconstructive) but we did a 'biopsy' only (but actually did both surgery and biopsy) and only paid 450 I think. she didn't do the reconstructive, because she wasn't comfortable with it, so this was a 'first step' kind of thing. I am hoping I get the test results sooner than later.. I want to know if it was benign or not. but all in all I had a good experience.. and they really helped me when I was panicking.. so like the whole time. hah. they called me three times when he was getting into surgery, when he was done and another update during the day to let me now how he was. as much as I love that office.. I hope I don't have to go back - and this solves everything =[ I will *hopefully* post pics.

It's wonderful to hear that's he's well...I was worried because we hadn't heard back from you on how things had gone...Praying that this procedure solves the problems and there is no more surgeries for Sly!

glad everything went well!!!
timewise and procedurewise, it sounds about the same as with my noodle...hopefully this is just a basic cyst and the vet was able to get the whole thing out! also, pricewise is similar - i paid just a bit less than you did for noodles procedure.
as i already told ya, noodle didn't need any reconstruction and you couldn't even see where the incision site was afterwards. he's had no recurrance, so, hopefully your little one won't either!!
and, hopefully, the results come back that it's just a cyst and not any kind of cancer!!!

and, hopefully, the results come back that it's just a cyst and not any kind of cancer!!!Yeah, thankfully I think this is all he will need. Nothing has ballooned up - mind you it's only been a week, but that's HUGE improvement. The incision site is really looking great too - I was so scared to get a Koda sized incision - thankfully, the only thing that 'gave away' that he had surgery was a little shaved belly and a small scab on his prepuce. I think they glued it so no gross spider stitches. I think what really nailed me was the meds, antibiotics, pain meds and some creme because he was licking around it and gave himself rashes. the meds were like 60+ for all of them. I wanted to update you all, that he's really great, but right after surgery (few days after too) he had nasty poops, rather really stinky or like jelly. Lately they've been green, seedy and jelly. He hasn't had weird poops like that since I got him.. I think it's the meds though... When can I put ramps and things back in.. I don't think he needs to wait.. but i wouldn't mind input. Thank you for all the well wishes and candles. (L)

I'm so glad he's doing well! And yes, both the anesthetic and the meds will continue to give him weird stools as long as he's on them. As for the ramps and so on, I'd wait til he's been checked by the vet again, just to be sure that he doesn't break anything open. Generally, the post about post-op is for abdominal surgeries, where the abdomen has been opened up. But not letting him overdo it yet is always good.
