Hey all first time post, my lil one hiei just got diagnosed with inslanomia. She is going to be 7 in Feb. She is takeing her meds like a champ. But my question is ever since she got sick she will eat out of my hand or when I entice her with food but not every single time. I have yet to see her eat or drink on her own.she only accepts it if I give it to her is this normal? She use to eat whenever prior to the episode that got her to the vets last Thurs. im goin in every 5 ish hrs she seems to want to eat around then any earlier she like nope I'm good ninja kicks the food out my hands. I give her meds with a bit of food and get her to drink about a half to a full cup of the lil medicine cups that come with cough meds. I offer her water each time I feed her and any time I wander in to check on her.

Read more: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/25521/newly-diagnosed-inslanomia#ixzz6BaVdpwuuHi Zeshi and welcome to the forum. I am so sorry about your little one's diagnosis. Maybe if you feed her do it near her plate. Also you can count the pieces of kibbles(if that is what you are feeding her) you r putting on her plate. Then, count to see how much she is is eating in 24 hours. Hopefully, someone who has more experience might help you better. What is the medication they are giving her?

They have her On Prednisone, she acctually takes the meds mixed with the vet cat food amazingly well now. She will eat out of my hand 2-4picese and then I place her in front of her food bowl and she will Chow down. Im doing that 2- 3 times a day now at medicine time 2xa day and once in the middle of the day. She has gone for water on her own a few times but I make sure to giver her some at feeding as well. She's still not willing to just up and eat on her own. She is a weird one but she is recovering well.

Good that she is always taking prednisone with the cat food as I have read it can be hard on the stomach.

I have just started going through the same thing with Mogwai. he is on pred as well (chicken flavored) he will sometimes not eat or drink. about every other day I have to give him subQ fluids. I have appetite stimulant that me vet gave us, I give him that about every 5 days.
if she starts losing her appetite ask your vet for appetite stimulant.

If possible, try keeping a record of his weight, once a week. And if necessary, if you have other ferrets, isol;ate hi for a few days so you can monitor his food intake. As long as he's eating and drinking, insulinoma is manageable. It's a good idea to take him back to the vet in a month to get his glucose checked again to adjust medication if needed. Also, prednisolone is easier onthe lver than prednisone, so maybe you could get that changed. Abita is 7 1/2 and has been on prednsolone for 2 years and is doing ok for a 7 year old.

sadly mogwai had to be helped across the bridge today. he was rebounding when we first got him on pred, he all of a sudden started having really bad diarrhea, he started getting dehydrated, we had to start giving him SubQ twice a day. Then we noticed the diarrhea was getting darker and darker black. We called our vet and he said to stop the pred and to bring him in the next day. Sadly he really went downhill last night, this morning he was non responsive, we had to take him to a closer vet and help him across the bridge.
I have had a few ferrets take Pred without issues, this is the first time I have seen the side effects of pred really affect a ferret.
Yes Mogwai was raw fed from age 6 months when we got him. We never fed him kibble. Mogwai I believe was going on 8 years, Not exactly sure as time has been getting away from me lately.

Hiei is doing fantastic she is eating and drinking on her own I give her her meds x time a day with some wet cat food or the ferret lax as she is so small she needs it regularly to keep hair balls at Bay. I'm wondering what other wet food can I give her I'm useing the hills diet stuff the vet gave her and IV got1 can left but it's got a ton of corn meal in it. She eats the meds and stuff from a spoon with out much hassle. (Note I give her only a spoon full of wet food to mix her meds into)

Here is how to make a ferret lax it is dated 2014. I do not know if Sherry still recommends this as it is kind of dated. holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/14888/homemade-healthy-ferret-laxHowever the ferret forum does say you can feed 1 egg a week and up to two if shedding bad. Now there will be some very funky stools with egg. My babies used to eat a couple to 4 quail eggs a week just because they loved them but my supplier does not go to farmers market anymore. The Ferret lax is full of sugar So how bad does she get hairballs?

Definitely better than the store bought stuff That is full of sugar, and not good for any ferret, let alone one with insulinoma. Instead of either however, egg once a week will do the trick nicely Since she is tiny maybe just give her a yolk split over a couple days instead of the whole egg whipped up.

I'm a member of several ferret groups on FB. There is one ferrant in Australia who feeds raw exclusively, and he just had a couple middle age ferrets diagnosed with insulinoma and one also has lymphoma. Seems no matter what we do, ferrets are still mortal.
