Hello there! I figured I should introduce myself and possibly voice a few comments, questions and concerns in one big post. First and foremost thank you for approving me onto thos forum I greatly appreciate it.
So a little about me and how I became a ferret mom.
My name is Becka and I am 21years old from Eau Claire, Wi. I work 46 hours a week, in a long term committed relationship and absolutely adore puppies. I have never wanted kids but I had been quite relentlessly pestering my boyfriend to get a dog. He consistently told me no because we just dont have the time and our roommate works 3rd shift. Then one night we went out to dinner with my mother-in-law and stopped by the pet store that was next door. She is a crazy cat lady and is overall well in-tuned with animals. Usually our local pet store doesnt have much for animals other than fish, maybe a snake or lizard, some mice or hamsters, a kitten or two and occasionally a few puppies. This night though the store was full. One of the associates was carrying around this little ferret. This immediately drew the attention of both my boyfriend and his mom. They inquired about the little guy. All they could tell us was he was desexed and they weren't looking to sell him until the following Wednesday. They dont know how old he really is or what his previous owner was like, just that he had been surrendered. That night we went home and discussed adopting him. My boyfriend and I were intrigued by taking on a pet that was intelligent and something that we could love together. We both did a lot of reading online about owning a ferret and decided to go back the next day to spend some time with him and get to know him before taking on this responsibility. Needless to say we pretty much fell in love at first sight and when we were forced to leave him in that tiny aquarium that afternoon in broke hearts. We left our information with the store, as the owner was out of town and essentially made the final call on the sale, and waited to hear back. I ended up taking a nap that day trying to pass the time until we could go back and bring him home. That same night we got the call that we could go pick him up. We were ecstatic that we could bring him home.
When it came time to name him, we both had the same name in mind. One of our favorite movies is Ice age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and most particularly the weasel, Buck, whom of which our ferret baby is named after. We watched the movie again the night we brought him home and he napped next to me.
Since then it has been a real learning curve on both ends. We learned quickly that a bowl of water is much better than a bottle, litter box goes in the right hand corner, and bacon treats are his favorite. Some other things that we've learned is that he was never given raw food before and shows nearly zero interest in it. He was eating Marshalls ferret kibble but I have been transitioning him into wysongs digestive support. Is there any recommendations to encourage more raw foods? I have recently tried to give him egg to help with hairballs and shedding season but so far he doesn't like it.
Overall he is very well mannered. He is litter trained, doesnt show much interest on chewing on anything (so far), he only nips when playing, usually with some form of barrier between him and our skin. He likes biting your toes if you have socks on. He is very curious and loves anything he can burrow into. I hoping to find him some more toys especially for his cage until we can finish ferret proofing the house and letting him free roam more.
Anyways, I love my baby very much, he is so adorable. I'm glad we got him, I just hope we can provide him an adequate home and life. Thanks and if you have any tips or tricks you'd like to share I'd love to hear them! Keep dooking!
