A little bit yes, you are cooking it when you defrost it in the microwave. If you forget to take it out the night before prep night or whatever to let it thaw out on it's own, warm (not hot) water can help speed the process. We def do not recommend the microwave though. I'm glad they found it ok to eat! I really hate wasting anything myself and totally understand the tight budget.

Hey Heather! Quick update. I increased the size of the bone-in-meat chunks I was giving them today. Basically, I gave them the whole chicken stick with the full bone inside it, and they snapped that up.
Titus is getting quite chunky. I hope that's a good sign. I read somewhere that ferrets are supposed to be tube and thin? Titus seems to be quite the chubster even though he runs around every day with Lily.

Oh nice! so they ate the meat and bone?!! That is awesome! If you are worried about whether or not Titus is getting too big, please post a picture of him "dangling" so we can see his shape. (giggle)

Will post a dangle pic asap! Yes, they crunched up the meat and the bone nicely. Meal time is actually really fascinating to watch, hearing all the cracking and popping sounds. I made an amazing discovery as well! The supermarket I frequent recently stocked an entire chicken torso, complete with organs and spine/neck! I chopped up the whole thing up into chunks and gave it to them, and crunch crunch crunch. Best part, the whole chicken cost like only 2 dollars. Super save

Hi Heather, quick update.
Today, I tried a different protein - pork belly. Titus was a little hesitant at first, but Lily went straight for it, and after he noticed her chowing down, he went for it too.
I'm guessing this fits into the muscle meat category. Would that be right?

Yes that is correct. It is high in fat so I wouldn't feed it any more then once a week after they get used to eating it. Sounds like they did great though! Pop quiz for you, 1.) name 3 organs besides liver 2.) give 3 edible bone examples. 3.) How many eggs should a ferret have and how often?

Ok, gotcha!
1) kidney, pancreas, brain 2) chicken wing, spine, pork rib ends 3) one egg once a week! yolk and white mixed up, or just yolk.

By the way Heather, I've actually noticed that there is some dark organ looking meat stuck to the roof of the chicken torso I've been slicing up for them. What is it? It looks a little like liver, so I'm not sure if this throws the meal plan off balance...
EDIT: I've also noted that eating this meat doesn't turn their poop black or tarry like liver normally does.

Well it honestly could be liver, heart or just blood. I would not worry about it throwing anything off though. It is not enough to do that. Here is another pop quiz, 1.) You run out of heart, what can you substitute in it's place? 2.) Does freezing degrade taurine? 3.) About how long does it take for a ferret to digest a meal?

1) Brain, tongue, or taurine powder! 2) No, but exposing the meat to heat will. 3) It takes about 3-4 hours for the food to pass through the digestive tract.

I've found a grocery a reasonable distance from me. I actually have an electric scooter coming, so I should be able to reach it to check it out!
By the way I am a little worried about something. Just yesterday, they only ate half their dinner and today in the morning they barely even touched the leftovers. They keep trying to stash it somewhere else. I'm not sure what's going on... They both had an egg yesterday.
They still seem energetic and are playing around a lot right now.
