Hello everyone. I was reading another post that had mentioned they give thier ferret 2-3 chicken hearts a week. However that ferret was on a whole prey diet. Mine are on the basic Franken prey diet. My ferrets get an entire meal of hearts and half another meal later in the week. My question is I feed my ferrets 10 chicken hearts each for their full meal. And another 5 each for thier half heart 1/4 organ 1/4 other organ meal. Does this seem about right? Or is this an excessive amount? Thanks for your help.

Yes. If your group can eat 10 hearts, then 5 hearts would be right for the 1/2 heart with organs meal (50%heart +25%liver+25%other organ).
If plate is usually clean after serving 10 hearts, I would throw in an extra or two. My abbey was a heart piggy in my group.
A heart can be given as a snack too.

Taurine is water soluble, so excess is simply excreted from the body on a daily basis. The only way they can be over fed is when it affects the balance of the rest of the diet

That's great. I thought that I read that too much vitamin A wasn't good for them. There's so much great info here. It's just hard to keep it all straight. These are my first ferrets of my own. I just want to get it right. Thanks everyone!

Yes, but there's a big difference between Taurine and Vit A. Taurine is water soluble.. Vitamin A is fat soluble, which is why Vitamin A doesn't get peed out and stays in their system, so too much Vitamin A consumption can end up leading to a toxicity.
Which is why too much liver is a bad thing. And why you need to be very careful, and even more preferably, avoid also giving liver treats if your ferrets already get their normally needed amount of liver in their diet. It's also why we avoid an oil like Cod Liver Oil, since it's very high in Vitamin A, and too easy to overuse.
