Oh dear, can I still ask questions and get help if needed? I do think we are doing pretty good and I am SO grateful!!!! I could not have done it without all the help on this forum and all the very knowledgeable and wonderful ferret-loving people! I am a little concerned about the change that is coming with summer. My husband doesn't want the doors closed off once the AC comes on. We are turning my son's train room into a play area, but he won't have the 13 steps to run up and down anytime he wants. I'm concerned he won't get as much exercise when we aren't home. Also, we are having some ceiling work done and I'm worried about fumes. What is the recommendation for keeping ferrets safe when house repairs are going on? I haven't checked the forum for that yet, but will have a look. Thank you Tessvictoria!

I haven't checked the forum for that yet, but will have a look. OK I looked and did not find anything. what do people do if workers come and use paint or glue in the house even if not in the same room with the furbabies?

Personally I would just close the door to the room they are in and if you have one, run an air filter. If it's warm enough you can also open the window in the room being worked on, and/or run a fan.

Thank you, Katt I just don't yet know how sensitive ferrets are to environmental stuff. Found it surprising they cannot be around essential oils so just not sure.
I do have a filter in his room and another downstairs so we are good there. I'm afraid it is WAY warm enough- hitting the 90's this week in the southeast. LOL! Can I borrow some cold air? (giggle)

The issue with EO's is that it is thought that ferrets lack an enzyme in their liver that is necessary to process (and thus eliminate) many EO's. Preventing the elimination of a substance means it will accumulate in the body tissues (like heavy metals - Jason's analogy was helpful). Many EOs are not "toxic" per se in a single exposure, but we don't know what levels are safe, and if they are accumulating in their bodies, high dose or repeat exposures could allow them to accumulate to toxic levels. We know that cats lack the enzyme, and ferrets (as fellow obligate carnivores) have almost identical metabolic systems; thus, it is very likely that they also lack this enzyme. Thus we have reason to believe that EO's MAY pose a risk for harm to ferrets. This coupled with the fact that we have NO evidence that EOs offer benefit, and that the EO industry is highly unregulated in terms of dosing and quality means that we simply cannot recommend their use. Of note we also have no safety data on using specific EOs, so we do not know what the adverese effects may be, or what safe dosing may be. ANY treatment has risk for adverse effects. What if your doc prescribed you a med she said "well you might have side effects but I don't really know. I don't know what they are or whether they are mild or dangerous...." would you take it? And we can't assume that an obligate carnivore is going to process plant derived concentrates the same way an omnivorous human will. So.... Some evidence of possible risk + no evidence of benefit + unregulated product = not worth risking it. If there was *solid* scientific data showing some benefit for specific uses of a specific EO, it might outweigh the potential risk for harm. But unfortunately at this time we don't. EOs are just a huge unknown, so we cannot recommend them in good conscience.

Yes of course you can still ask questions! But I think you're ready, but only as long as you feel comfortable. Just let me know if you are and I'll give you your final exam, and you'll have to post your menu for heather to approve

Here's the your final exam if you feel you are ready to graduate Please try to answer from memory alone! And if you could post your final menu for heather to approve I would appreciate it! boogeryboogerIn a Frankenprey menu, how many meals are Bone In meals? Can heat degrade Taurine? Can Taurine build up in their systems? List 3 sources of edible bone. What is a bezoar? What should you give as a blockage protocol to a ferret who has swallowed a foreign object? Is it a good idea to mix muscle meat, bone in and organs all in one meal. Explain why. How much can a ferret's appetite and weight change seasonally? Are leaner meats better for your ferret or fattier meats? Why are cooked bones dangerous and raw bones safe? You have run out of heart, how much taurine supplement should your ferrets get? (be specific) How many meals a week should be organ, and of those meals how much needs to be liver?

Hi everyone I had a message prepared but it wouldn't go out because our internet was out and has now been out for 2 days and can't get help until Saturday!!! I'm using my phone but it is not easy to do.
Question: he only .4 ounces of heart last night. When does the seasonal change normalize so that he is back to eating the normal amounts we were accustomed to?

Their appetites don't just change during the seasonal change, they change for the entire season. You can expect them to eat less and weigh less until they enter winter mode again.

And if you could post your final menu for heather to approve I would appreciate it! boogerybooger In a Frankenprey menu, how many meals are Bone In meals? 7 to 9Can heat degrade Taurine? yesCan Taurine build up in their systems? noList 3 sources of edible bone. frog, quail, rabbitWhat is a bezoar? sounds like a beast of some kind. I admit I looked it up- a blockage, fiber or hair, etc. that gets stuck and can be fatal if not passed or removed. What should you give as a blockage protocol to a ferret who has swallowed a foreign object? one tablespoon of pumpkin then 1 tablespoon of vaseline alternating each hour repeating until you get orange poops. That doesn't sound clear enough- 1st hour pumpkin 2nd hour vaseline, 3rd hour pumpkin, 4th hour vaseline, continue until orange poops. Is it a good idea to mix muscle meat, bone in and organs all in one meal. Explain why. Organs are tricky when feeding frankenprey diet because it will throw off the balance. With whole prey it's fine as it is their natural diet. How much can a ferret's appetite and weight change seasonally? A lot! I think 40%Are leaner meats better for your ferret or fattier meats? fattier meats- fat for energy. Why are cooked bones dangerous and raw bones safe? cooked bones can splinter more easily. You have run out of heart, how much taurine supplement should your ferrets get? (be specific) 500mgHow many meals a week should be organ, and of those meals how much needs to be liver? 3 meals are organs. One meal is heart and one meal is half heart and 1/4 liver and 1/4 other organ and one meal is 1/2 liver and 1/2 other organ.
