Ferret's name:BOOGER 2. Ferret's weight: 3. Ferret has eaten about 2 ounces amount on average per meal. I'm still determining this. seems it may be more than 2 ounces, but using 2 ounces to figure the organ meals. 4. Stools on various proteins--pretty good, but still poops out some undigested meats- much smaller amounts now. He seems to need all the bone-in meals with no muscle substitutions. 5. Activity levels: great! He runs up and down 13 steps and jumps, does the weasel war dance. 6. Weekly menu: week of March 27th sometimes menu gets modified some observations- Booger is not too keen on chicken or duck necks or feet. Seems he loves pork, lamb and will eat catfish and quail. I hope I can find more favorites! Sunday am catfish pm half and half-- dk liver, lamb panc. Monday am Quail pm Quail Tuesday am DK NK pm LMB MUSC Wednesday am CK NK pm LMB HT Thursday am egg, DK wing pm DK wing Friday am FL pm ck ht + duck liver + lamb spleen Saturday am Lamb shoulder pm DK Sunday am CATFISH pm duck liver+lamb spleen Read more: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/22639/transitioning-thread-booger#ixzz4cgSFwOLP

seems we may have a slight problem- I left a duck wing all day and he didn't touch it. I gave him his lamb heart and he ate half of it on the spot. earlier when trying to get him to eat the duck wing, I pinched off some and he ate it- a smidgen. Don't know if this is connected but right after, he was very itchy and I noticed it with the quail, but he will eat the quail. Oh and he only ate some of his duck neck last night left from am meal. He either doesn't like duck or it doesn't like him. Thoughts on that? When you have a moment that is.

Well, it's possible, but I'm leaning towards him being picky... dermatitis can be a symptom, but how were his poops afterwards? Any vomiting? Hmmm. Something to keep an eye on for sure. Perhaps katt will have more to say on that subject That menu looks excellent! You seem to have a good rotation of proteins going. I'm glad he seems to have so many favorites! So, I'm pretty sure you already know this, but can you tell me how you would be able to tell if he's having too much bone or too little bone? Also what are considered edible bones?

Have you introduced all the proteins you are interested in feeding?

So, I'm pretty sure you already know this, but can you tell me how you would be able to tell if he's having too much bone or too little bone? Also what are considered edible bones? Nope no vomiting that I see anywhere. Stools look good. I just wondered if he could possibly have another hiding spot where he got food from today? So too much bone makes the poop look seedy and too little makes them more formless- too soupy so to speak. Edible bones are whatever they can chew up and eat. For many ferrets a turkey leg would not be considered edible bone. Beef bone is not considered edible bone. Large dense bones are not edible. Edible bones are things like chicken wings, quail, frog legs, pork riblets, many fish. small birds- pheasant, chicken, quail, Cornish hens etc. I have not introduced all the proteins. I would like to try EVERYTHING!!! except beef again- not for a while anyway since he throws up every time. I am open to other ideas about proteins.

ok so I got home today and he had not touched his quail. He had a large egg with some water and salmon oil(cleaned the bowl!) before I left at 10:30, but I didn't get home until almost 7. When I got him up, I put it up to his mouth and he vigorously licked it so I pulled at it to expose fresh flesh and bone and he went for it. Then I put what was left in his bowl along with the other part from the fridge and put him to bed. We'll see if he eats it during the night. I hope he isn't waiting on me, because I will be out of town in a few weeks for almost a week. My husband has agreed to be vigilant about him unlike my son who cares but just doesn't know enough, and learning the raw ropes now isn't part of his life unfortunately. anyway, just blabbing while I wait for a file to load-- sorry.

Don't apologize for babbling! It is spring so that could be the reason for the appetite drop.. did you recently increase the size of chunks you were giving him? Maybe he was just too busy sleeping and playing to eat. That does happen lol

Oops sorry I missed the tag and Tess was handling everything perfectly so I just stayed back to watch. Lol It sounds to me like he's being picky AND starting to cut back his intake for spring. I wouldn't worry too much about allergies. I know people talk about allergies a lot, and protein intolerances are not uncommon, but I also think they are very over-"diagnosed" by people. If he's having persistent diarrhea, projectile vomits immediately after eating a protein (and you have confirmed that it is NOT bc he ate too fast), he has significant dermatitis beyond the normal ferret itchies and spring shed (he's going to get itchy with the season change - You've been warned lol), OR yeast infections - THEN we can think about a possible allergy. A note about spring - they can gain/lose up to 40% of their body weight with seasonal changes. This means that their spring weight loss and appetite reduction (esp in young ferrets who have some baby pudge to lose to boot) can be quite alarming if you aren't used to it. ALSO ferrets often tend to eat more when they first start the switch, but as they settle into the new diet their intake decreases. That's very normal. So I wouldn't worry just yet.

Thank you, Katt I did not know that about seasonal changes affect the appetite. He hasn't lost any weight so I'm thinking it could be the adjustment to the switch. He had a good appetite today! I have more to learn about ferret changes with the seasons. Is there any conversation on the forum about that? Thank you!!!!!

What other proteins do you Have in mind? I don't know for sure. He hasn't really had rabbit much or mice. Will they eat goat meat? I have access to all of those. Are their other proteins others are eating that would be good to try? Oh I've been meaning to ask, can ferrets have whole unpeeled shrimp? Is there any nutritional benefit to have unpeeled over peeled? Booger has had shrimp once- unpeeled. He ate it fine. Thank you!!!!! Hope you're having a great weekend!
