1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets? The Vet
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
Fully switch- I know it is best and have cats and dogs on partially raw, but want ferret to be fully raw. Right now doing frankenprey, but may consider whole prey. Probably not live though.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
It is their original diet and best. Can help with the common ailments too. I prefer to use nature as much as possible when it comes to food and health.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It requires a commitment of several months at minimum. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. The switch takes time and effort every single day. It can also be extremely frustrating at times. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc), or limited time due to work, then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing and realistically able to make the necessary time commitment? I have more than committed my time to this little booger. I worked my schedule to give him his oral melatonin during the 2 hour window every single day for at least 9 months- guess that shows I’m serious. I have also mostly got him completely switched through reading this forum and asking lots of questions. You all are AWESOME!
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
One ferret. Booger, 4 yrs, Male, Has a DES patch, has always been underweight off and on. Was the runt of the choices, but my son picked him (SO GLAD HE DID!!!) We’ve had him since he was I think 4 months old.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup? He’s on raw, no soup for a few days, following the frankenprey menu. His past diet was mostly wysong dry with lots of FDR of archetype rabbit, quail, chicken. Never had a treat in his life- not good for him. I did actually melt his melatonin in a tiny bit of chicken or turkey baby food. So that was a treat I guess.
So far his raw diet has been: chicken soup, rabbit soup, pork soup, beef soup (allergic to beef). Muscle meats have been chicken, Lamb and pork, (no more beef). His bone-ins include froglegs, quail, chicken wings and necks, lamb shoulder sliver, quail. We are just getting to the organs this week. He loves chicken hearts! Will be trying chicken livers tomorrow. Also have lamb hearts, duck hearts, pork kidneys, lamb kidneys, may be able to get pancreas.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened? Nope, first time.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share? Nothing I can think of right now. Want to get this app in.Oh yes, he looks a little like your ferret picture with IBD, but the Vet did not seem worried last visit because of the switch to raw.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
every day
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible). coming soon
11. Do you have a scale sufficient to measure soup ingredients AND to regularly weigh your ferrets? I have a food scale that didn’t work to weigh Booger- he’s too wiggly even with food. So I use a luggage/fish scale and it works great!
12. Have you met the requirements for this program? Are you at least 18 years of age? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc? Yes yes yes to all.
13. Do you understand that if your mentor or an admin recommends seeking veterinary care and you refuse to seek appropriate care you may be dropped from the mentoring program? Yes
14. We occasionally have a wait for a Mentor to be available. While you wait we encourage you to get started by creating your own switching thread under Diet Transitions where all of our mentors and members can help you while you wait for your personal mentor.
