1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
not quite sure, i researched ferrets for over a year before i adopted my first 3. i already knew about raw feeding for dogs so it was probably a combination of that & discovering this forum that set me on this path.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
i'd like to make a full switch to raw. i was thinking about initially switching to comercial raw, in particular Vince the Vet - Minced chicken carcasses, extra chicken meat and lamb offal 20% (heart, liver and kidney)as its so accessible to me ( my dog eats it) & then move to chunks & chicken wings ect. afterwards i'm thinking whole (frozen) prey, but i'm still considering it as i can't even clean up dog vomit yet alone entrails lol i'm also open to suggestions, so if my mentor thinks skipping the comnmercial is best then thats fine.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
it's something i've been meaning to do for too long. my lady ferret, Ellie was diagnosed with Insulinoma 2 weeks ago, it gave me a big kick up the bum
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It requires a commitment of several months at minimum. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. The switch takes time and effort every single day. It can also be extremely frustrating at times. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc), or limited time due to work, then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing and realistically able to make the necessary time commitment?
i do indeed, anything for my little sunshines
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
i have 3, all were rescued from the rspca 2 years ago. Ellie & Jasper were seized, i believe they were skin & bones with no hair at the time. although now they have no problems with skin or fur. i have no idea about they're ages but both are missing teeth. Jasper (male) has cancer of the liver & spleen. he isn't medicated, has a stunnngly soft coat & apart from a swollen tummy you'd never suspect anything is wrong. although he looks fat i think thats down to the swollen tummy, i don't think he's overweight. Ellie (female)was diagnosed with Insulinoma 2 weeks ago, i took her because he coat quality dropped & she seemed so skinny. she's gone from 600g to 500g in around 5 months. her intial bg was 1.6 & 3 days later it was 2.8. shes doing ok, showing no symptoms but doesn't seem to be eating like she used to. she's on steroids atm. Frankie (male) was surrendered to the rspca & adopted with Ellie & Jasper. i think he may be around 3 years, looking back at photos he looked very much like a 8 - 12 month kit. but i could b wrong. he has no health problems & is the picture of health! his weight seems about right.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
all 3 are on Orijen cat & kitten kibble. they share an egg up to 3 times a week, which they go CRAZY FOR! ellie likes watered down kibble but the boys arent really intertested.i will be buying some salmon oil soon to see if they like that
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
about a year ago i tried watering down their kibble & eventually started giving them the commercial raw. ellie had started eating but because no one was really eating much at all i freaked out & put them back on kibble until i learned more as i wasn't sure if any1 had a bg problem.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
i'm totally commited to giving my little fuzz butts the best life i can. i struggle with enrichment as no one stashes, steals or plays with toys i'm putting this down to bad starts in life. but every day i try to engage & get them active.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
every day
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
i've tried but they dont seem to be uploading :/
11. Do you have a scale sufficient to measure soup ingredients AND to regularly weigh your ferrets?
yes
12. Have you met the requirements for this program? Are you at least 18 years of age? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
yep
13. Do you understand that if your mentor or an admin recommends seeking veterinary care and you refuse to seek appropriate care you may be dropped from the mentoring program?
of course
14. ive started my own switching thread - holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/22607/azaelias-switching-thread
