While I am waiting for my mentor I have made my first batch of raw soup, containing 8 oz chicken thighs from Stop & Shop, 1 oz turkey heart, 1 oz turkey liver, and 1/2 tsp of eggshell powder. I tried (in this order) putting it in a regular bowl, spoon feeding, dabbing a little on their nose, and then mixing in a little salmon oil and then kibble. I only got a couple licks from both of them and they didn't seem to like it.  |

You keep at it. A couple of licks is good...really. I usually put the bowl and spoon on the table, every couple of minutes I grab a ferret and feed it. I can just about guarantee by the end of the day if you're consistent about this and don't offer any kibbles while you're doing this, they will be eating it. If you're not getting any food in then give them a break at lunch time and give them half an hour in cage with their kibbles. Once the half hour is up, you let them roam again and in about an hour it starts all over again.

I have really dropped the ball lately! :/ They were doing okay - licking hesitantly but only while I spoon fed it to them. And then (as you know) Jaxson had his surgery and that's when I stopped offering it to them. I meant to keep up with it while he was recovering but I had final exams right after the surgery, and then shortly after my numbers tripled in size (ferret sitting for two weeks), and then Christmas came so I have barely been home. Things have finally settled down and I have five more ice cubed sized raw soups left in the freezer that I plan on restarting to introduce this week (I have work off Tuesday - Thursday).
The batch I have was made about a month ago... Still okay to thaw and feed?
After I'm done with my current batch I am going to have to pull some strings to keep it going. My boyfriend and I broke up and he was my primary source of transportation (I have no car). I can take the bus to Stop and Shop so until I get my car (hopefully by February - my fingers are crossed!) I am pretty much limited to whatever they are carrying.

Oh no! That is a lot to happen all at once, I'm sorry. When it rains it pours.  You can definitely use the frozen soup - meat in the freezer stays good for a looooooooong time.  RE transportation issues, if in a pinch and you can't use the bus, have you ever tried Uber? We have been using them a lot for traveling for residency interviews. They are pretty cheap, esp for a short ride. Short rides run $5-10. I think the most I have paid was like $12 for a longer ride. It's more $ spent when things are tight, but something to consider if you really need transportation in a pinch. |

Besides the surgery, everything else was enjoyable (for the most part) - it just left me more busy than I am used to.  I will definitely start reintroducing the soup on Tuesday and update how that goes. Hopefully they'll take to it this time around! I may have to add a little more water to it and throw it in the blender again - I was reading up on other people's old&new transition threads and mine looked a little chunkier and thicker than most pictures I saw. I have never tried Uber myself, but I have a lot of coworkers that use (and drive for) Uber so it's definitely available in my area! It's a 20 minute car ride to the butcher shop that I have in mind. |

When I first started doing soupies for my ferrets, Loki is the one that took pretty easily. Athena, my baby, she's the one that was the fussiest crazily enough. Her soup had to be pretty much water with flavor in at first, and then slowly get more and more body to it as time went on. I also had to add a little bit of raw egg yolk in multiple times to lure her to trying it. And I had to start her with a spoon each time. If I just put the bowl down, no go, she just gives you the "screw you mommy" attitude (you know, that look they give after looking at the bowl and deeming what you offered isn't worthy and you're simply a monster, lol) and then just wanders or even sprints off. If I dipped a spoon and had her lick from it at least 3 dips, then you could put the bowl in front of her and she'd have at it a bit. She now eats when the bowl gets put in front of her, without needing to spoon start her.
So just don't give up, and keep at it, eventually it'll take.
