'm really sorry for being away the past few days. Things have been pretty hectic the past week. How did the vet trip go for Misio? It's incredibly rare for ferrets to get salmonella, so I highly doubt that would be the case, however I do hope Misio is feeling better now. D: The menu (even though it is simply a mock menu) needs just a little improvement. Considering it's your first, you did great. I love that you've colour coded it. I do that too, it really helps. I'm counting 9 bone in meat, 2 muscle meat and the organ meals. I want to also mention that gizzard is actually considered a muscle meat rather than an organ. It makes a perfect meal on it's own as well, very chewy (never put them in a blender), and they help to clean teeth. Chicken and COrnish game hen are technically the same protein (CGH is culled younger I think.) So when I count CGH, I tend to count it as chicken. In this case it would mean that you have 6 meals of chicken/CGH, that may be a little heavy. Other proteins which make a perfect substitute for chicken would be duck or quail. Add those to your list if you ever can get a hold of some. You can also add an extra 1 or 2 meals of turkey necks and or pork buttons in this menu to balance it out more. Fantastic work remembering to add a whole meal of heart. With the organ meals, you want two meals of organs with the liver and a secreting organ such as kidney, thymus, pancreas, reproductive organs, brain, etc. holisticferretforum.com/natural-diet/raw-diet-the-meat-of-the-site/organ-meats/With that being said, I think you did do a fantastic job on your first attempt at creating a mock menu.

no, it's ok! I can understand a hectic week. haha, well Misio didn't enjoy being at the vet, to be honest. the trip to and back was fine, but being handled by her and getting his medicine/shots were definitely not something he enjoyed. funny enough, he likes berry flavor better than liver. :/ what a strange little guy.
yeah, I don't think it's salmonella, but the vet said there was Something in his stomach, some bacteria imbalance. I did find him recently climbing up to my dresser to drink out of an algae bowl, so I'm wondering if that could have caused it? (yeah, I moved that away from his reach now!) to get up there, he'd have to shimmy up a rock-like wall, it's the strangest thing.
ah! thanks for the advice. it's gonna be tough to get a variety for them; I'll have to look around. I haven't seen quail or duck here (unless people hunt some themselves . . . ).
also: I'm getting a bit frustrated with my babies. they were at a point where they almost ate 1oz of pork soup at each meal but with this chicken soup they barely have 1 tsp at each meal and I just can't get them to eat more, it's a battle each time. I almost feel like I'm starving them. :S what would you suggest I do from here?

Hi nannah, I thought I would drop in and let you know that due to unforeseen circumstances, I will have to take a break from mentoring. That means that I will no longer be helping out with your transition, but don't worry! FireAngel will be taking over for me and will be helping you, Kinga & Misio along the transition. (She will introduce herself a little later on.) You've done fantastic so far, and you wil continue to do a wonderful job with transitioning Kinga & Misio as long as you stay persistant. Good luck with your transition. Take care, -Machan.

Hi there! I have read through the transition so far and you are doing a great job! :goodjob: I'll keep things the same as Machan has, I'm happy to answer any questions you may have so don't be afraid to ask anything. I'll post a bit more tomorrow for you.

Hi Nannah, how is Misio today? I hope the soup has not been too frustrating for you. Not to scare you but this will probaly be the case with every new protien that you introduce. Essentially you are starting over each time until they are accepting and eating a variety of protiens. Persistance and patience is key and you making the choice to stick to your guns is a big help too!

Misio is pretty active! he's doing a lot more active than previous days this week. OH. ok, I thought I was doing so badly!! so when they get used to the protein I make another soup of a different one? (or am I misinterpreting?)

You are doing fine and I'm glad to hear he is feeling better! We can add a new protein once a week, no matter what stage of soup, slivers, chunks they are on. What is the consistency of the soup you are doing right now?

That is a great consistancy, now if they are accepting that well it is time to add some slivers to that. The easiest way to sliver meat is to do it while still partially frozen. Slice very thinly like the size and thickness of your pinky nail. So if you are doing 8oz of whatever muscle meat try doing 1oz of slivers and 7oz of the current consistency plus the heart and liver of course and as they accept that and are eating the slivers you can increase the amount of slivers. You may have to hand feed them the slivers at some point to get them to eat them but you can try just being sneaky with them and adding them in at first. Make sense?

they're actually not accepting it well, because it's chicken. but they did accept it well as pork! did you want me to go back and make the pork soup or pork + chicken? but yep, what you're saying definitely makes sense! I'm just not sure where to go from here because as of now they're not eating well with the current soup

If they are not eating the chicken well, yes you can make the pork and add a little chicken to it, then a little more and so on until they are eating the chicken. Once they are eating the chicken we can try beef maybe. While I do not want you to hurry them, I do want you to push them. Pushing them will keep them moving forward.

Okay, thank you. I will push them, haha, I'll try! I also wanted to tell you - I'm going on a week-long vacation starting this Sunday. my mom will take over the ferrets' care & feeding during this time. I'm gonna give her one heck of a long list for this and I'm going to check up on her daily and . . . let's be honest, SEVERAL times a day. after she checks up with me, I'll tell you how they're all doing. is this ok? but I'm amazed at how my mom has turned around lately. she even purchased a bunch of pork today for the babies! she was excited to try to make a pork+chicken soup for them and have slivers of pork in with it. she seems excited to get started, and I'm so grateful and shocked, haha! she and I will make a bunch of stuff in preparation for the next week I'm gone.
