Sorry Natalia, I almost missed you post! Our vet has a partner in the office that theoreticaly "could" call in pred for him, and should, since it was noted in the chart that if he were still having a problem he could get the pred without another visit. Last month though, my vet noted that he could get the carafate if needed (we talked over thr phone after he has in 3 times that week, when we thought it was a small blockage, and after the barium he was doing all better...) So when I called and asked for it, the other vet gave me a hard time because he doesn't treat ferrets. It involved some fighting and threats to get it! He didn't need to treat him, just follow his partners instructions! I could go to the emergency hospital, which if neccessary, I have done and will do, but the exam fee there is $225, plus whatever else they want to do! So, since he seems to be doing better yesterday and today, I will wait until Monday. I don't want to be cheap or stingy with him, but I also dont want to waste! I hate the idea of putting him on the pred. I have to take it sometimes for my own health issues and it makes me feel absolutely terrible. I hate to do that to him too.

Also, not really sire how many meals hes getting. I just grab him and his food every few minutes while I'm home and make him eat. He will only eat from my fingers still. He is getting a few spoons full eacb day, more when I am home. During the day, he is eating kibble.

I don't think he needs an emergency visit just yet And believe it or not- the pred will help him feel SO much better, and it is only short term. The only reason for being on it for even 2-3 months is the weaning off stage.

it's important he's feeling better! playing is a very good sign and yes, like Sherry said, pred will help him alot. ferrets don't react on corticosteroides like humans, he should feel much better on it i know you're worried but trust me, you'll see improvements just in day or two.

Since droping the ensure, I've seen such a huge improvement in Dook! He's playing more than he ever has with us. Hes eating, alert, and seems happy. I don't know if its just that the the carafate has finally had a chance to work, since he's now been on it for about 3 weeks, or if the ensure was hurting more than helping, but he's looking great. The other day he dropped to 1 pound 11.7oz, but today hes up to 1 pound 12.2 ounces. Not a lot, but the first time in weeks that we've had any gain at all! He's eating like a champ! He had 3 tablespoons of his kibble/water/rabbit mixture. Most of it he licked off of my fingers, but he also licked a little off of the plate, which is a first!!! Once he starts doing that some more, I think I will put him in his own cage with only the soup, so he is forced to eat it when I am not home. I want to try wening him off the kibble, but its hard to do when he eats it all day. I think I should get some of those frosty bowls so he can have his soupies out all day. I wouldnt want him to get sick. At the same time, he doesnt seem to like it cold. Any suggestions?

this is a huge improvement! well done Dook!!! :boing: soup is good for 6-8 hrs and they won't eat it if it's bad. if you are absent for more than 8 hours you can leave one cube of frozen soup aside along with the thawed one. it will, when dissolved, be at room temperature and it will give you more time till you get home. i am sorry for my english, it's not great. in case you don't understand something i wrote pls do not hesitate to ask me to explain

Oh that IS fantastic news!!! I am so glad to hear an improvement Steadily decrease the kibble soup and increase the rabbit for him for now. And also use a spoon now, instead of finger feeding to get him used to eating from a different texture. Start him on the plate, let him eat what he will, then spoon feed

The bag of food (were using commercial raw) says to dispose after 2 hours at room temperature. Ive seen bowls with ice packs in them that keep frozen all day, but dook doesn't seem to like cold food.

I leave grinds out for several hours. They were built to handle the bacteria, and if it is bad they won't touch it anyway

Thats good to know. Right now we are doing 1/4 rabbit, 3/4 kibble. Sonce dropping the ensure, hes back up 1.5 ounces. Not sure of ots the ensure or just that the carafate has finally had long enough to work. The vet wants to hold off on the prednisone for a little bit, since theres no vomitting or diarrhea. She said as long as his weight continues to increase, keep doing what we're doing.

If his weight is going up, then the inflammation is going down and he is gaining nutrition! so YAY!!! Keep increasing the rabbit and descreasing the kibble. Hoping to have him fully on the rabbit in a couple of weeks at the outside

Hu, sorry I was MIA, I havent been feeling well, and nothing really new to report. Dookster is still insistent on not eating from a plate or bowl, only fingers. Even if I put a little oil on it, he wont eat off the plate yet. Otis and Houdini love the rabbit/kibble mix. We decided that Otis and Dookster will live together, so that Dook is not alone, and we aren't feeding all 6 rabbit. So Otis is transtioning to it also. Natalia, once I get Dook settled, I want to transition my other 4 to FDR. We bought Turkey FDR, and Ferret Bueller, Houdini and Daisy like it. Pebbles is a pain in the butt...
