I have my ferret nation cage in the ferrets room with the bottom doors off. I was just wondering if that is too high for them? The level is 2.5 - 3 feet off the ground, I've had it like that for almost a year, but I was cleaning today and realized it might be too high. Would that hurt them if they tumbled off? I have some cat trees that are that high 2.5 feet. Do those pose threats?
I've never worried about it, but I recently had a sick ferret who wasn't mobile and he managed to crawl down to "fall asleep" on the couch in their room away from the other fuzzies, and I'm worried he may have stumbled on his way down if there was no door, when we found him he was curled up on the couch, so i know if he did fall it didn't kill him instantly, it would have been at a height of about 2.5 feet, and he was a sturdy male, we didn't get a necropsy so there is no way of knowing, but it breaks my heart to think of that. Opinions?

Ferrets are hardy little creatures, and that height probably wouldn't hurt them, but maybe putting a pillow under the doors would be a good idea.

A pillow is a good idea. We have a ramp, but I've seen them slide off when they're still sleepy or if 3 of them try to use it at once.

My ferrets climb all over my couch whenever they are out and they always tumble off or jump off and the couches are a little higher then the bottom panel of my ferret nation and they just keep playing and acting crazy. So I think it's not to high. There is this Seen on TV Pet Steps that I got at Petsmart and it is literally the best! It lines up perfectly with my FN and they just run in and out all day! Ill add the link so you can see what I'm talking about. www.petsmart.com/dog/ramps-steps/as-seen-on-tv-up-under-doggie-pet-steps-zid36-25953/cat-36-catid-100020?var_id=36-25953&_t=pfm%3DcategoryIt really is worth it. I keep one door open and it takes up most of that space so they don't really fall out. 100% better than the ramp you can order that goes with the FN.

I normally have either a box or a big stuffed duck in front of it mostly to help them getting down.

I would not leave my doors open on ferret nation unless something soft like pillows permanently stayed on the floor. They r not cats and do not have the spring of a cat.
my senior right now is is locked in a playpen for 4 weeks as she tore her cruciate ligament --this is uncommon from what i read. I have no shelves in my cage and no ramps. so she injured it in some other way---maybe a fall that I never saw. I am hoping she will not be lame for the rest of her life and develop arthritis
(I cut my ferret nation on side and have a tube attached to a ramp, so i never have to open door except for cleaning, However, this is only good for free roaming ferrets because there is no way to keep them in)

Ferrets are super clumsy animals. A fall from a small height is not likely to kill them but it's best to be safe and put something down to cushion a possible fall. Even people have been known to really hurt themself with a tumble if they hit their head the wrong way.
Your sweet Pabu is gone and you will never know for sure what happened without a necropsy. It's too late for that now but you can look around and make sure things are safe for the others.
