There are many things to consider when faced with a "surgery decision" for your ferret. One of the most common questions regarding surgery often involves whether or not your vet has the necessary knowledge, equipment, skills and experience to do the job right. I ran into this web site that has excellent informantion on tips to help you evaluate a vet's surgical skills for ferrets. It provides the VERY BEST guidelines for evaluating your vet's skills regarding the question of ferret surgery. Please check this out even if you have an excellent ferret vet - there's some overall good information on ferret surgery that will help provide any ferret owner with better insight to the specific considerations for ferret/small animal surgery. I agree that it is an amazing resource. As some of you know, I've been looking for a new vet. I 'm currently happy that I've found somebody who is interested in learning more about ferrets and has an open mind regarding second opinions, etc. I would not feel comfortable with this vet as a ferret surgeon simply because I want the very best I can get for my brats. I have access to a vascular surgeon at CSU, so if I cannot have my wonderful, now-retired ferret-expert & extremely talented surgeon, I'll put my ferrets' lives in the hands of the CSU vascular surgeon. Cheap? Nope, but my babies' lives are priceless.
I must say that the only good thing about having worked my A$$ off for years and years and years is that I can KIND OF afford to spend a LOT on medical for my ferrets. Most of my friends would say that the amount of time I spend at work is not work the coin. They would also point out that for all the money I spend, my brats do not live much longer (if longer at all) than ferrets that do not get all the blood work, surgeries, etc. They're probably correct about this. I will say that I have learned a lot from the blood work. Hopefully, sharing my experiences will help others deal with any issues that may arise with their ferrets. We are all learning together.

Jennifer, you should start a new thread about blood work... I'd be interested in hearing what you've learned and your opinion on the procedure in general.
Also where do you live? It might be less expensive traveling for ferret care than going to a vascular surgeon - and for shits and giggles, have you mentioned this to your vascular surgeon? I am imagining a hilarious reaction.
