So a bit more than two years ago Zack was diagnosed with insulinoma with a BG level of 1.5mmol/L. We used Prednisolone for about half a year at about 0.5cc per day. Then with a new raw diet and the Pred, we got his BG to be stable around 5.5mmol/L and weaned him off of the Pred over the course of a few months. He hasn't needed to use it for about a year and a half now.
Now his BG is starting to drop below normal levels, staying at around 3.8mmol/L. In addition to that he has had a drop in appetite, and a he lost about 250grams in weight. I talked to the vet and we decided that starting up Pred again now would be best for him.
So we have Sulcrate, and Pred, and a skinny old ferret.
The vet said, it's 0.5cc of sulcrate then wait an hour and give the pred, then feed him after that. Does that sound right to everyone?
To add to his weight I also think I should also give him some extra hand feeding of soup. Probably a bit (30grams?) after the pred, and another one (30-60grams?) in the middle of the day. Until his weight starts rising a bit. So the question is, in addition to the balanced weekly frankenprey menu, that he has 24 hour access to, should the soup be just muscle meat with some eggshell/bonemeal, or a full balanced soupie?

I'm sorry that your little one's insulinoma is progressing to the point of needing medical intervention but he's had a long go of it without. Great job. I've always used a full balanced soupy. It's just easier and it saves doing long term balancing. ciao

Thanks. I was leaning towards the balanced one, but it is good to hear some confirmation on that:) He is getting on in years, and this is my first batch of ferrets. It's frighting to deal with him getting old and sick. And he hates the meds and BG checks

OK OK I'm very happy happy with Zack's progress. Since starting pred he has gained 80 grams in a week, and now he has his appetite back. He pigged out on Turkey wings and Hearts yesterday and more turkey wings today. His skin is no longer loose and his winter coat is coming in nice and thick Here he is in his post-Turkey slumber (dance)

I'm glad he's doing better. It was good that he was even able to get stable enough to go off pred for a bit. His life will be extended by at least that long by deferring the pred side effects.

He is doing pretty well so far on the smallest dose.
I'm not sure what's happening to the pics, I can see them on mobile but not on the PC. I used to be able to see them from both. I'll try ans fix it later today.
