Hi all! So I'm aware that eggs are good for helping with hair balls during shredding season, but I'm not sure how to serve them. Do you mix it in with their food, replace a meal with it, or count it as something like a mid day snack? Thanks for the help

Hi! Eggs can be served in a variety of different ways. Scrambled (whisked and always raw) simply by themselves is the most common way. A lot of people have an egg day and serve an egg as a treat in between their breakfast and dinner meals.. It can also be mixed into food to spice some things up and make meals exciting sometimes. You can use either the entire egg, or simply use the yolk. The egg is so nutritional that it does make a meal on its own, but I recommend having it in-between meals rather than replace meals to keep their diet balanced. Egg is recommended as a once a week treat and a ferret can have 1-2 eggs per week. Possibly more during shedding season. Egg yolk contains lecithin which is used to prevent hairballs (trichobezoars) from forming in the stomach and digestive tract. Lecithin breaks down the fat particles in the diet so that hairballs don't form or clump together which basically makes the ingested hair pass through the digestive tract easily. The yolk itself contains around 115mg of Choline which is a necessary nutrient that helps to improve gastrointestinal motility. Why is egg once or twice a week ? I have 13 ferrets and they get 2 eggs to share between them everyday (so it works out at just over 1 egg a week in total). Would I be better changing that to a big vat of 14 eggs on just one day (or 2 lots of 7 eggs)
