I wish mine went in their sleep. It is hard to watch them pass.
All of mine have went being helped or had violent seizures. It only takes once seeing them go with seizures and you will help them along every time , so I feel obligated to help them pass so I never have to see them go that way again.
Cassia right now is going on 8 and she has a lump on her spleen. We decided to not do surgery. She has been treated like a princess and sleeps in our bedroom fully free roam ever since she became dehydrated and had to go see the vet. She has not had another bout of dehydration since and is eating on her own very well. She runs around a bit and actually plays with her crocheted eggs, She has even crawled up on the bed and bit me on my toe a few times when I did not get out of bed at my normal time to make her soup.
She really seems to be Happy and I will not take this time away from her to do surgery that she may not recover from. You just have to look at the quality of life she currently is having or not having and make a decision. If she does not seem to be having any good days, you may be keeping her around for more your reasons than hers.
I generally use the potty habits as a guideline. Ferrets are clean creatures so if they end up pooping and peeing where they sleep with no attempt to get away from their sleeping area I take that as a sign that it is time.
even though she may look bad, she may still be having good days.

crazylady Prissy has no cage mates. She only would sleep with Kahlua, who has been gone 2 years now, and she broke off her bottom canines because she would not be caged. She reminds me of some patients I work with. Her spirit is indefatigable. But tonight, she caused me to do something I never thought I would do. I picked her up and gave her a kiss on the ribs. Right where she had just rolled in fresh poop. At least I didn't get it on my hands. This time. The things we do for our patients and our ferrets. She is a 9 yo Real Canadian ferret. Our beautiful Prissy.
