The old gal keeps going and going... When she is awake, she is constantly moving, almost in panic mode, crashing into walls and stuff. She hates being caged, but she leaves 4 foot pee and poop trails when she's free. Occasionally she'll let me snuggle her for a few minutes, and almost fall asleep, but then she pops up and she's 90 mph again. When she's confined, she cage rages, whether in a playpen or her plastic carrier. She already broke her 2 lower canines years ago. We've even tried giving her a dose of benadryl to calm her down but it had no apparent effect. Does anyone know of any natural sedatives we could calm her down with?

Maybe she is excited over the new house. I remember my first ferret, Didi. We took her into a hotel room and put her on the bed, and she was so excited---- she pooped here and there on the bed. Of course back then we did not even know what a war dance was---thought she was having a spell or something. Pooping and peeing is something they do when beside themselves. Do not have a remedy other than letting her explore one room at a time.

no, it's more than that. She's over 8 years old and she's been here for 2 months. She's mostly blind and deaf, and we suspect a stroke over a year ago caused her blindness. But she has escaped everything we've tried that doesn't have steel bars.

What about Bach's Rescue Remedy? Have you tried any of that?
Does she seem frightened or anxious or is it just an excess of energy? If she will let you, you could try holding her on your lap and gently rubbing a warm washcloth over her. I've read that reminds them of their Mom grooming them and is calming. I did this for Ponce when he was so sick and he would relax and fall asleep.

Ellie did the exact same thing for her final 2 months with us, she was blind and deaf and was on pred, she would run around the house doing laps bumping into things, I nick named he Roomba after the robotic vacuum that does the same thing.
not sure if there is any illness that causes this.

Does she like any of your other ferrets? One that might help her get around and settle a bit? Grace who was blind was very active.
Is this new? It could be that she is still trying to create a new mental map of your new place and feels lost since nothing is what she is familiar with.

Ellie was exactly like that. Not sure if it was her meds or if something else was going on with her. like I said before It started the final 2 months she was with us. I was thinking dementia, like she forgot where she was and was freaking out.

She looks like she is lost and looking for something. She changes directions when her whiskers meet an object. Could you confine her to a playpen type area and let her learn that space or maybe one room?
A stoke might have caused brain damage that is making her think she has lost something or someone (a friend, kit, etc) needs her. I'd be tempted to talk to a vet and see what they think of the video. I'd be worried that she is in a constant state of panic or fear. That's no way to live.

Marty does that all the time, especially when in a new place, but he stays up against the wall. Sometimes its a warning he has to potty, other times he's just going and going and going until he finds a blanket to sleep under.

I agree with Jeremy, she is creating a mental map. Also, as Bitbyter said, she does look in a constant state of anxiety---a vet visit maybe and definitely a lot of attn, comforting words, and maybe let her investigate one room at a time. some extra throw beds for her, so when she gets tired of expending all that energy she can lay down. If she is a good pottier, some extra places to go, so she will not frantic over trying to find one. I had one free roam girl that tried to go to potty when she had bloody diarrhea--now that is one picture that has forever stuck in my memory.

I think everyone is on the right track. She has found herself in a new place and is trying to figure it out and it's making her anxious. She is blind right? Maybe scent mapping the areas she needs to visit will help.
Do you have anything from your old home that hasn't been washed. You could put that in her cage to give her familiar smells. I would think she would be more secure in her cage but the new smells may still overwhelm her and she isn't sure if she is safe and secure and wants to get out.
Have you found a new vet yet? I'd give them a call and ask about this. If you don't have a vet then maybe Emily's vet would help. He might be willing to prescribe an anti anxiety med without a costly vet visit. Maybe not but it's worth a try.
