I'm really sorry she's so sick. I know you have a lot invested already, but when she gets better look for another vet. I've had full blood work done for less than $120. A CBC was like 60, and that covers a lot by itself. And, there is no harm in prescribing a broad spectrum antibiotic (abx) in the meantime, but most ferrets absolutely hate taking the liquid form of any antibiotic. You could narrow the type of infection by blood tests, but broad spec abx work on most of the common infections anyway. My old vet would prescribe them if I asked but she did want to do an exam first. Enlarged spleens are common with infections. Ferrets don't live long enough to worry about developing resistance to abx. Jeez. I hope she's better soon.
As Bev said, bad teeth could be a cause of not eating as well. Eddie stopped eating kibble then soup before I discovered he had some nasty back teeth, but he was at least 5. It's hard to get a good look in back, but if Lily has sore gums she might well make it impossible. Best wishes...

Home from the vet. Vet talked to 2 ferret specialists who based on her x-Ray and blood work both agreed on a diagnosis and treatment plan. They believe it started from foot injury and that started other things. I have 2 antibiotics, stomach coating, antacid, 2 pain relievers and fluids to give her. I have a good feeling now about this. Please pray for Lily that this works. Lily is adored my me, my husband and our 4 human children.

An ulcer caused by injury isn't uncommon, so it does sound like your vet's diagnosis is sound. Good luck to you and your little one. Keep us posted ciao

I can't believe they held you for ransom like that. Please keep us posted. Good luck ciao That's exactly what I thought too! I'd go to another vet, the situation screams "hostage" rather than "I'm a professional here to help you for the sake of the animal we both care about." I'm sure there were other less than $300 options, and as crazylady said, antibiotics because not everything shows up in blood work. Idk, it rubbed me the wrong way.

Sorry for the delayed response but I only get on here at night (over here in Aus). As I mentioned I am in Australia so don't think the cost of Diablo's surgery will be relevant to you because I am in Australia, it would be in Aus $ and it is quite some years back too (Diablo lived quite a few years after his blockage incident and has now been at the bridge a couple of years). I can't remember off the top of my head but could search it out if you thought it would help.
It seems like you have found a way forward anyway and now have a probable diagnosis and some meds, so am keeping you in my thoughts and hoping Lily is soon back to her ferrety self.

Good that the vet checked with specialists, instead of being proud and stumbling around thing that he(?) wasn't sure about. And now you have all the meds and a treatment plan. I hope Lily has a swift recovery

TBH the costs sound reasonable - both Rolo's and my cats' vet charge anywhere from $80 up to $160 for bloodwork depending on the test. Same thing for urine, depending which tests they want to do. Actually the adrenal panel is around $200 I think. I've also had my vet refuse antibiotics & anti-inflammatories dependant on blood results. If an animal is already compromised the wrong treatment could very quickly kill them. I've heard lots of horror stories from my friend's clinic where clients begged the vet to move to treatment without proper tests only to end up killing the animal because they took a 50/50 chance "hoping" it would work. The only reason the vets in these cases were swayed was because the animal would have died had they done nothing anyway. Anyways, thoughts on vetting aside, I'm so glad you guys have a treatment plan set up now. Wishing you all the best in Lily's recovery

Update: Lily is worse! She has been on the following since Friday evening: Amoxicillan, Metronodazole (both antibiotic for bacterial), omeprazole (antacid), Sucralafate (stomach protectant), and Buprenorphine (for pain, Lactaided Ringers (subfluids) and Carnivore Care Before starting all this she was still drinking a little in her own, still eating a little Duck Soup, and a couple bites of her Zupreem and walking with a limp maybe 10 feet at a time. When I started this treatment plan she stopped everything cold turkey! She won't walk, or drink and eat in her own. She won't move. I have to touch her to see if she's even alive. Now vet says maybe some of the medicine is causing her to be nauseous and that's why she wont do anything. She recommended stopping all medicine to see how she reacts. I Have an appt with another vet tomorrow to give her an IV drip, but I do t know if that will do any good. I feel like all hope is gone.

Howdy again. I am so sorry to hear that not only have you had no improvement but that Lily is getting worse.
Is she pooping and peeing at all, normally, runny? What colour are her nose and gums, are they pale or white?
On the side of a possible blockage, the fact she is still hanging in there suggests it may be something else going on. You have been trying to find answers for at least 5 days by my count and most ferrets with a blockage would not still be here.
I don't have any additional suggestions, just trying to get some info that may help someone else give you some pointers. I do think a different vet may offer some better answers.
I also saw you post in the emergency email post and I will send a email to it on your behalf with the link to this post. Hopefully some answers can be found and Lily can be helped. You are in my thoughts.

Update: Lily passed away during the night please pray for comfort for my kids. They have never had to deal with a loss before. Lily will always be a part of our family. We have 4 other ferrets that are still very playful and acting normal. I will continue to watch them since we never figured out why Lily got sick.
