its that time of year again! has everyone heard about microwaving sponges to kill germs and bacteria? just as little as 15-30 secs can kill everything in that sponge and also make it last at longer. Couple things to remember this also works on wash clothes and stuff too! just make sure to wet it and pop it in the microwave. THIS WILL BE HOT, i tend to throw it in after the dishes and its there when i pop my coffee in in the am

I like that idea. Thanks for the tip. I usually put mine in the dishwasher and that means waiting for it to go through the cycle. I always need it immediately after it goes in there, so this will save me trying to juggle 2 sponges. (dance)

I nuke mine before & after doing dishes. I used to use paper towels to do the dishes because sponges were home to germs, then I learned you could nuke them.

If your dishwasher has a sanitize setting you can use it as well. I just throw my sponges and dishrags in when I do a load of dishes.

Which is why I use the dishwasher (on sanitize). It gets hot enough for long enough with no risk of starting fires.

I know there is specific food related bacteria that can only be killed with bleach. And with bleach, less is more. Using too much actually decreases efficiency.
I usually bleach, rinse with hit water, & nuke. The kitchen is the only place I use bleach because I'm paranoid.

Heat kills all food borne bacteria that I know of but does not inactivate the toxin produced by botulism.

when you are using bleach to sanitize you need just a bit of bleach and cool water -- to hot of water will actually nullify the chlorine--. Im overly parinoid when it comes to my sponges i throw it in the microwave every night and i end up swapping them out by the end of the week.
also in the snake word they recommend bleach/ vinegar 1:10 parts and expose it to sunlight, with in 24 hrs its completely safe for a reptile, which can be very sensitive.

I nuked mine once and never again because it stank like cooking bacteria soup. Then I switched to popping it in a bleach water mason jar next to the sink and screwing the lid on until next time I use it. Works, but the metal lid is rusting in response to the bleach. Needs to be refreshed once a week. I also tried a saltwater solution, don't know how microbiologically similar the killing properties are but it smells just as fresh (if not oceany) when it comes out, lid rusts just as much.
