It takes 10-14 days to come out of the crysalis. I can't find the caterpillar pics i took, so I'll have to get some from Dar. She only found the caterpillar a couple weeks ago. We've seen some purple ones here, could be admirals. I've never lived around monarchs so I've always liked the swallowtails. This gal ate 4 of these milkweed leaves after we got her, in less than 24 hrs. The white flecks on the leaves are grass seeds. Assuming the position
About 12 hrs worth of poops

So I guess it will make it through the winter ok? We'll keep her in the jar outside for a day or two with some nectar. They know when it's time to head south to Mexico by temperature changes. It's supposed be rainy/cloudy for a couple more days. After that she'll be on her own.

I've got one of those in the freezer, waiting for me to get brave enough to butcher it.

3 of the neighbors trespassed in our back yard again tonight. They only started moving toward the woods when they saw us in the door watching them, but not too panicked. I'd like to find some corn for them for when it gets colder, and to get them to hang around longer. These guys are BIG compared to Florida deer. Omg. I wanna feed them by hand so bad. Pics shot thru kitchen door so they aren't too sharp but neither am I. short vid. you can se the last one had the flag up, but then dropped it and hung behind to check us out for a minute. After he went into the woods, I went out and he was still lagging behind. I was able to watch him for a minute as he slowly caught up to mom. Then suddenly I saw 3 flags and they bounded of into the brush. But it wasn't like a panic, still.
