Three's a crowd, four's a business. I wanted to get my two ferrets Copper and Reska a playmate, so of course ferret math struck and they'll have two playmates. Here's Rusty:
Nicknames so far:
Rusty the musty (as in mustelid)
Rusty Burger
Grunt
He's a big, heavy ferret and estimated to be about 8 months old. His favorite activities so far are trying to dismantle everything in his pen and biting toes. He's really energetic and will hopefully be a great playmate for my other ferrets. Sometimes while he engages his sister in play he'll cluck excitedly. I haven't taken his weight yet, but I fully expect it will turn out that he's somewhere in the range of 3-4 pounds. Copper is much smaller and lighter than him and he weighs about 2.5 pounds. It's fun to hold such a big ferret, although soon after you pick him up he squirms to get on the floor. Sometimes he'll make a sort of grunt sound if he's squirming really hard to get free, hence the third nickname.
And Callypso:
Nicknames so far:
Cally
Calleesi
She's a tiny, delicate ferret that is probably only 3-4 months old. Supposedly her name is Greek for "she who hides", which is surprisingly accurate as she frequently disappears someplace to sleep. I catch her occasionally playing with her brother, but she generally seems to take it easy. She does like attention, but hates being scruff fed and will casually work her teeth around my fingers and inflict some pain when she's had enough food training. When she asks to be picked up though, she doesn't bite me. As a panda pattern, she's prone to being deaf and I definitely suspect this to be the case. She doesn't respond to noise as much as her brother, frequently tilts her head back and dead ferret sleeps quite often. When the mood strikes her, she will dance and hiss (I don't think I've heard her dook) to play, but with her more-relaxed personality, she'll probably be a good snuggle buddy for the other ferrets when they're sleepy.
They've been in quarantine since I got them on Saturday evening and they seem to be eating well even though they're in the middle of transitioning to raw. I started with thin FDR soup and have been thickening it up. Last night they also got some lamb in the soup and as of this morning are doing pretty well on half soup, half ground lamb:
I plan on introducing them to my other ferrets this evening. I was going to set them up together in a fenced area outside, but the air quality is very poor right now due to smoke from wild fires, so I will probably need to set them up inside instead. My friend owns the house and doesn't want them playing on the bare carpet, so I might wash the tub and set them up in there (as a neutral territory) with some towels.
