I'm afraid of him hurting his toe without the bandage, but I'll get my mom to help me hold him while I remove it later.

I use human toenail clippers and while they are kicking oil from their belly I trim the nail using a side to side clip, rather than front to back

I use tiny cat nail trimmers, they work a lot better than regular sized ones for some reason.

So I took the bandage off. I hurt Marty in the process, but he didn't get scared so I continued. Then I soaked his paw so I could loosen up the blood between his toes so I could take a closer look. This is when I first started feeling lightheaded and hyperventilating. 5 minute break of just holding Marty and apologizing over and over. Then I decided to clip the claws. I cut the quick of the torn one, and it bled. I couldn't find the stupid corn starch, so while I was close to fainting I redid the bandage twice because Marty pulled his paw away at the last second to sniff something, sliding the first one off. I couldn't get ointment on the second one because I was too frazzled to open the cap, but there was a little on the paw from the first one. Marty never got injuries or tumors at his previous homes. I feel incompetent and guilty.

Hi dont feel guilty ! it happens as long as the bleeding has stopped leave the foot un bandaged letting the air at it will do it more good as changing bandages will only annoy him and could open it up again its better that you have removed the nail as a bent snapped nail would only cause him more pain but once again dont feel guilty remember some vets in certain circumstances cut a nail on purpose to obtain blood samples ! take care bye for now Bev

Seeing him walk around made me feel significantly better. A domestic vet I know told me that its best to keep the claws on the paw immobile so he can't rip it again, wrapping it lets the body do whatever is necessary to heal, either by letting go of the claw or by resetting it.
