My manager has a kitten who is approximately 10 weeks old now. She rescues strays, gets them vet checked, and adopted into loving homes!
She noticed, this kitten was having trouble pooping. She took him to the vet (I think his first vet visit, he was 6-ish weeks old), and got him on worming meds and antibiotics. Still having issues, brought him back to the vets who gave him a few enemas, took some x-rays, and gave him more medicine. The vet has no idea what it could be and I didn't push for information.
Today, I asked how the kitten was and my manager said that he was still having issues. He's on a couple medications, including a laxative type med, but still is not having normal poops. She mentioned that she has a holistic/do it yourself book and was going to try melted butter to lossen things up. She then said "I kept reading that raw meat softens stools...you feed your ferrets meat, what should I do?" (I felt so honored but wasn't quite sure what to tell her) I said an egg yolk could help and shouldn't hurt him. I also said to use an oil (salmon, olive, etc). I found a couple cat websites to give her. I mentioned the 'blockage protocol' of pumpkin and vaseline, but that should be a last resort. He eats wet food and kibble. I'm sure she doesn't want to switch to raw, but maybe after she reads all the benefits!
I asked if he could have a tumor? Or if his intestines maybe didn't develop how they should have? She thought that vet said he was clear from the x-rays.
Has anyone heard of or encountered a constipated kibble fed kitten? He 'dribbles' little poop spots (because of the lax she thinks) but doesn't have a normal bowel movement. She said he eats well and plays very well! I'd like to help, but am not sure what else to suggest.
