I've been looking at whole prey options, just in case I want to go that route eventually, but I can't see myself buying so much food at once, nor can I see myself wasting money on shipping costs. Other places have shipping costs based on distance (and they happen to be on the east coast, while I'm on the west coast).

More expensive than going with Rodent Pro... I guess I'll be buying my own box freezer before all that

I though the same as you when I first ordered from rodentpro, I had 3 tummies with teeth and learned that it really does not last that long.
I now am ordering 2 to 3 boxes at a time and wish they had larger boxes at a reduced price. I am now feeding 7.
I also order the quail, chicken, rabbit, gp, and mice. this makes it much easier to fill a box.
My gang absolutely love the whole prey quail and chicken, (no so much store bought quail/chicken)

Yea... I'm primarily concerned with the cost per order. I have monetary anxiety, so spending 50 bucks more often is easier for me than spending 200 bucks less often, because after the 50 I'm ok with buying something else a few days later, whereas 200 would probably send me into a panic and I'd be in a slump for a while. This of course would be best if I got the same amount of product after spending $200 in 50 increments as if I spent it all at once, but I know that's not how things work. After I've gotten everything needed to switch my babies to raw, I nearly started crying over 6 dollars *

A second hand freezer really is a good investment for a raw feeder. As for spending them money at Rodentpro, look at it like you are only spending $50 a month for the next 4 months. Just budget out what you are going to feed them and at what rate. It sucks to have to fill up the box do to the upfront cost but as long as you stretch out what you order over time it isn't to bad. Lastly, the other option is to look for someone near-by that might be willing to split an order with you.

Unfortunately, to save a lot of money you have to spend a lot of money upfront. You also have to invest in things like a freezer, a scale, a meat cleaver, and kitchen shears that will make preparing a raw diet a lot easier. My 15cu chest freezer is a life-and money-saver. It allows me to buy in bulk from Rodentpro. There's enough space in there to hold food for the ferrets, my German Shepherd, and a hawk. I recommend going to Sear's. That's where I got my freezer, and it was 1/3 the retail price because it had a tiny, inconspicuous dent on one of the bottom corners. It even came with bins that help a lot with organization. Anyway, I buy 6 months' of food from Rodentpro and then prepare (cut, portion out, and bag) 2 months' worth of meats at a time. This will save me a TON of money on shipping costs over time, because I too live on the West coast. If you're going to order from Rodentpro, order soon because they're having a $29 per box flat rate shipping deal for a limited time. I think if I were to order 6 months' of food for my dog, ferret, and future hawk at the same time, the upfront cost would be close to $900, which seems enormous, but it's actually $38 per animal per month, which isn't that bad, especially considering how much my dog eats.

I only order when they have the $29 shipping. It happens quite often so I don't have to wait long. One time I looked at the shipping and said NO way. I waited a couple more weeks and they had the $29 per box shipping again.

Thanks guys! I guess I'll put an ad on craigslist, see if I get anyone willing to split an order with me. If not, I've got a couple friends who would help out in a real emergency.
