Suspecting he has a blockage. I don't know how, maybe a hairball. Tried the vaseline/pumpkin protocol. But 2 minutes after the pumpkin, he promptly regurgitates it. Of course my vet is away until wednesday. So I am taking him to another vet in two hours. He's like, ferrets don't normally vomit, when they do, it means they are really sick or there is an obstruction. Tell me something I don't know. Gah! When he does poop, it is just mucous slimy stuff. He's had on and off mucousy poops for a couple weeks, and he just finished a course of metronidazole and amoxicillin. When it looks like it is gone, it comes back.

I would be concerned that what you're dealing with is a floating blockage or a bezoar that has finally set up a position somewhere in the digestive tract. Sounds like the vet knows what they're talking about it being a serious issue. I would consider getting a barium done to see if they can locate and diagnose the problem. Good luck, I will light a healing candle for Sunny.... ciao

I hope he's ok. When was his last normal poop, or any that was more than mucous? Is he eating?

The vet I was going to go to this afternoon was a bust. In this area vets are so territorial. So I went to see my vets substitute, who is not very ferret savy. But very nice. He did a good feel around in his intestines and tummy. Couldn't feel anything abnormal. He thinks the vomitting is related to him having off and on diarrhea. He thinks it is gastritis and really didn't feel comfortable doing surgery if he needed it, and would rather do the wait and see. Since he is perky and alert. Wants me to fast him for 24 hours (not gonna happen). So he gave me some sulcrate and I will pick up a prescription that had to be compounded tomorrow morning. He just willingly ate 2 hours after the sulcrate. He did have 2 poos at the vet office, the first was on the vet checking his temperature, the second was pumpkin in his crarrier, looked more formed. I'm watching him now to make sure he doesn't regurgitate his food. He's sleeping. He is a very high strung ferret, everything stresses him out, and his buddy foggy was put to sleep a little while ago. So gastritis does seen possible.

yea, I would not fast a ferret either--if he doesn't want to eat that is different

It may indeed be the cause. I'm glad that he's managed to keep his food down and that the sulcrate seems to be settling his stomach. There's nothing to do but wait for your vet to come back. It does look like he should be ok. Do not fast him, that is old dog school...it would work for a dog but it would have horrific outcome if it was a cat or a ferret Good luck ciao

He still has horrible diarrhea, but atleast it looks like poo now, not just mucus. His meds will be ready in a couple hours when the pharmacy opens. Have to drive an hour to get it. It's called tylosin, supposed to be great for diarrhea and it also supposed to soothe the intestines. So hopefully that and the sulcrate will help him heal. My little high strung ferret. Everything really does stress him out, he also got his suprelorin implant two weeks ago. If you flush the toilet he gets stressed out, going outside, water running, any noises really and he gets stressed out. I just have to keep the house quiet and keep him calm.

I will be sending Well Wishes to Sunny. Poor little fellow. I hope he feels better soon. Have you tried Bach's Rescue Remedy to calm him down? Give him a big hug and tell him not to stress so much. He has a loving Mom, a good home and everything will be okay.

Just a heads up, I've given that med to my cat who had severe diarrhea.. and while it works great, it is SUPER bitter. He would froth at the mouth every time he even saw me drawing it up. I've also never heard of it being given to a ferret.. Not to say that it can't be, just never heard of it.

Thank you. I haven't given him the tylosin yet, thanks for the heads up. I don't know what they compounded it with, maybe it won't taste so bad. I just know the dose for a ferret was so small, there was no way of measuring it out even close to accurately. I never heard of it either. But it can be given to ferrets.

If it's a liquid form, you could try syringing up some water first and then syringe the meds into it. Then have a second syringe ready with just water and let him have a drink of water to wash the taste down.
