I had the same problem with exotic direct, so I put money away every month instead. I spent over £1000 when one of my ferrets was sick. I wish there was a decent insurance but squirrelling money away every month will have to do for now
My vets are pretty good, but there seems to be a high turn around of vets there lately so I only ever see the head vet unless there's an emergency, if they have a problem my vets can't deal with or don't have specialist equipment for they send me to manor vets in Halesowen manorvets.co.uk (it's Birmingham area) they are really good, expensive, but the ferret specialist I saw last had ferrets of his own and knew exactly where to touch my ferret's stomach looking for lumps and bumps. He was fantastic. It only sounds like something little but one of the vets I saw at my practice couldn't be sure what she was feeling.
How many people in the UK keep their ferrets indoors? I'm making the transition soon but I'm worrying about my ferret not liking a cage as he's used to a shed type dog kennel. What cages do everyone use?

Hey again, I love my vets, I can't say that they are ferret experts but they are pretty good. The nearest RSPCA brings all their ferrets (and other small animals) there to be treated and neutered and I've found out that a few of the vet nurses have ferrets of their own. We are sort of lucky in that it's a husband and wife vet team, just the two of them. They try to use the same locum when they go away (holidays and things) and while we've never used her with the ferrets she's really nice and listens to us. I would recommend our vets to everyone, they are brilliant and so caring, the nurses and receptionists are wonderful too. But they are near Halifax so no good to you.
As you know we are trying to do the opposite, move ours out. But many people all over the world keep their ferrets inside, TBH I think the majority on the forum do and many think along the same lines that keeping them outside would be like keeping a child outside.

Hi guys.. another UK owner here..
we feed raw all the way a mix of comercial ground, pet supply chunks and butchers offcuts. Not such a bad deal.
for commercial ground check out Manifold Valley Meats.... Very good quality and good ground portions to include whole carcass or just muscle. Muscle and bone and some times muscle bone and offal. I get different kinds as well.. Chicken,Beef, Turkey, Pork, Venison, Game, Pheasant etc etc... they also do a large range of chunked up stuff as well as carcasses.
Vet wise... many are refusing to neuter now in favor of the implant. I understant the guidance that is leading this but I truly think its a mistake for the average ferret owner and a plus for the practice coffers.
Thankfully I have a vet who knows and trusts me and when i say i want X done... they do it lol
