Hi there! I've been searching the threads and I'm sure this has been discussed.. but I just want some direct answers to be sure. I've taken away all my guy's treats (bandits, etc) and replaced them with Simply Nourish freeze dried (not raw) chicken/turkey/beef liver treats. They are the dehydrated treats, and they aren't refrigerated or anything like that. He LOVES them... and they consist of only the one ingredient, so I'm assuming it's okay for him? I was also wondering about the fact that they are so dry.. should I be making sure he's getting more water? Could these treats cause any blockages due to their dry texture? Again, sorry if this has been asked. But my little guy absolutely loves these treats, and I want to make sure they are okay for him to eat daily!

As other dry food like kibble, it will dehydrate him, but it's still healthier than other treats like bandits. It shouldn't cause a blockage because it's meat and will be digestible. If you do feed wet food, make sure to allow a couple hours between feeding that and dry food like the Simply Nourish treats so it doesn't cause any digestion problems. One thing you could try is to allow the treats to soak in warm water for a few minutes to rehydrate it. If your ferret still likes it, then that removes any dehydration problem with it.

raynebc, thanks so much for your response! That rehydrating idea is great.. I don't know why I didnt think of that. So is there a limit on these treats..? Since they are just chicken, is it possible to give him too many? I just want to make sure he isn't eating too much of them.

If ferrets eat too much liver they can get Vitamin A toxicity since it builds up in their systems. Liver should be no more than 10% of their diet (if you're feeding kibble it will already have liver in it as well). What I do is cut a treat into four pieces (depending on the size) and press it between my fingers a bit to kind of soften it and make it bigger. Since ferrets gobble up treats really fast anyway the size doesn't matter so much to them as the fact that they're getting it at all. Also instead of re-hydrating the treats what I do is put a drop of salmon oil on top of some water and make sure they get a good drink afterwards, but that's only because I enjoy hand-feeding the treats which would be gross with a gloopy wet piece of re-hydrated dried liver

Oh also Orijen makes treats which are more "balanced" in terms of nutrition. My girls love these ones: www.orijen.ca/products/cat-food/freeze-dried-cat-treats/tundra/Ingredients: Boneless venison, elk liver, boneless elk, venison liver, boneless quail, steelhead trout obviously you shouldn't overfeed any treat, but you can probably get away with giving a little more of these since they are more "meat" and less "liver".

Thank you Celene!! I didn't know about the liver, but thankfully he doesn't seem to like them as much as the chicken ones and just eats them once in a blue moon. Definitely good to know that though. And I've seen those Orijen treats before, so I will definitely take your suggestion and pick some up!!
