Nova's tail has a sort of curve/bend in it, but it's always in the exact same spot and direction (it's also sideways rather than up or down). I've felt it and there are no obvious bumps or anything and it doesn't seem to be causing her any pain. Do ferret tails sometimes have a natural "shape" or was it previously broken?

I've read it may be a birth defect, but I don't know how possible it would be to tell.

I think if it had been broken you would be able to feel an irregularity. I took in a cat once who'd had a broken tail and there was a very clear kink. That last picture is SO DANG CUTE.

I agree with Rachel I'd think if it was broken you'd feel a change, but possible it was dislocated? In any case, it just adds to his uniqueness. He's a handsome bloke

Actually unclejoe, Nova is a girl! I still agree with her adorableness though. I'm really happy to hear that her tail most likely wasn't injured. When we got her and Mocha we had absolutely no background on them except that the lady giving them away on craigslist had got them each from different people and that they had never been to a vet, and spent most of their time in a small cage with two other (male) ferrets. Based on Nova's temperament and behaviour we assume she was previously abused. Either way, she has overcome her fear and trust issues and is now super snuggle and loving and falls asleep on us.

Oh those pictures are too cute. Both of them are darling and I just love your signature picture. I don't know about Nova's tail. My Keller has a small bend at the end of her tail also. I've read that sometimes their Mom will overgroom and make a tail shorter. Maybe her Mom was too enthusiastic and bent her tail. I prefer to think that it was too much Love, rather than an accident or cruelty. By the way, unclejoe has the current record for the ferret with the longest tail on the forum. (giggle)

I am going with an inherited genetic trait or something to that effect. Instead of curling, my shar pei had a crook in his tail.

@poncesmom, does that include the fur? Nova's tail has grown in so thick for the winter that the fur makes it at least an inch longer!

Holy mackerel, that is one HUGE tail!! BTW I just love the title of this thread And agreed about it more likely being natural; we had a cat that came to us with a tail that was broken in two places and you could really feel the knots at the breaks. Although who knows? It's the mystery of the rescue babies

I didn't measure with a ruler, but I was curious so I pulled my girls out of bed to see their tails. Mocha's to the tip (not including fur) is exactly as long as her outstretched legs (if she's "hanging" and her legs are straight). Nova's, however, goes a full inch past her toes, plus fur! Here's a tail pic I have from when they were all bottle-brushed after being outside: The curve in Nova's tail is less noticeable because of all the fluff. This was also before their "winter tails" grew in
